It’s been almost 40 years to the day since one of motorsport’s greatest talents and personalities claimed his first win, a win that would cement Ayrton Senna’s legacy and lay the foundations for a run of outstanding sporting moments and victories.
April 21st, 1985, saw Senna and his Lotus 97T bring home the glory at the Portuguese Grand Prix, a moment which is still often talked about and celebrated around the world like it was yesterday. It wasn’t just your average first win, either. In atrociously wet conditions, it took Senna around 15 laps to shake off all his pursuers, with what would become his trademark superiority in the wet; controlled yet quick, and always in the highest gear possible to avoid wheelspin. By the chequered flag, the John Player Special Lotus had lapped the entire field bar second place, and Senna’s name would gain immortality as he crossed the finish line.
