The 928 may have failed to usurp the venerable 911 as Stuttgart’s king of the hill, but that shouldn’t diminish how fabulous these V8-powered, front-engined grand tourers are. While they are certainly more suited to crossing continents than crushing lap records, that didn’t stop Porsche’s engineers from honing the 928 into a fearsome track weapon, which is where this ultra-rare 928 Club Sport coming up for sale at Broad Arrow’s Porsche Auction on April 27th comes in.
Originally, a mere 19 of these lightweight 928s rolled out of the factory equipped with the “M637” Club Sport package. Well, we should say 18, because this matching-numbers example was initially retained by Porsche itself, presumably because it’s almost impossible to stop staring at, especially with its picture-perfect specification of Forest Green Metallic over a Cashmere Beige and Black leather interior, all beautifully accentuated by the silver Club Sport decals. It might also be because this is the only example ever built with that combination.
However, the Club Sport pack was more than a few nice stickers, and included manual sports seats, a short-throw shifter, and a limited-slip differential, while the whole car was lowered by 20mm and boasted a 150mm wider track. Under the hood there were also some significant changes, with this example fitted from factory with a special “SP” stamped M28/41 5.0-litre V8 engine producing 316 horsepower. Elsewhere, the sunroof was left on the parts shelf, while a lighter exhaust, lack of undercoating, and magnesium-alloy wheels made the Club Sport a featherweight compared to the rest of its ilk. This stunning example looks to be in outstanding condition, having benefited from 65,000 euros worth of work between 2019 and 2021.
