Which of these 7 manual Porsche 928s will power your next grand tour?

The Porsche 928 may have never successfully replaced the legendary 911, but it did succeed in earning the adoration of grand tourer fans from Stuttgart to San Diego. RM Sotheby’s upcoming Paris auction has 7 stunning examples, so we took a closer look.

1979 Porsche 928

Our first 928 from RM Sotheby's upcoming Paris sale from February 4th to 5th is a lovely 1979 example. Wearing the purest form of Tony Lapine’s original design for Porsche’s in-house 911-killer, this early Silver Grey Metallic example presents in great condition, showing a healthy 168,652 km on the dial. Powered by a 4.5-litre V8 connected to a dogleg manual gearbox, these early cars are know for being the most playful and fun-to-drive of the 928 breed.

1983 Porsche 928 S

Adding more power courtesy of a larger 4.7-litre V8 heart, this 928 S puts out just shy of 300 horses. While still retaining the squared-off front bumper and recessed taillights of the original, the ’S’ variant gained visual brawn thanks to a front skirt and ducktail alongside those fabulous ‘manhole cover’ wheels. Finished in Smoke Grey Metallic or a cream hide interior, this low-mileage 46,646 km 928 S is a certified peach!

1987 Porsche 928 S4 Club Sport Prototype

This is one bidders will certainly have to fight over. Originally delivered to legendary racing driver Derek Bell, this is one of only five prototype 928 S4 Club Sports built for Porsche’s contemporary factory driver lineup. 100 kilograms lighter than a production S4, this 928 boasts an attractive combination of Grand Prix White over a Marine Blue leather interior, complete with the driver’s choice of manual ‘box.

1988 Porsche 928 S4

This 928 S4 may appear rather ordinary among some of the other startlingly cool examples on this list, but first impressions can be deceiving. Finished in the paint-to-sample shade of Satin Black Metallic taken from the 944’s colour palette, this S4 was specced to perfection with a 5-speed manual gearbox. Enjoyed thoroughly throughout its lifetime as all 928s should be, this example now proudly displays 153,698 kilometres and will surely be ready for many, many more.

1989 Porsche 928 S4 Club Sport

We’ve admired the prototype, and now we present the finished product. This is one of a mere 19 examples of the lighter and sharper 928 S4 Club Sport, resplendent in its factory specification of Guards Red over a black leather interior. The Club Sport package removed 100 kilos thanks to removed sound-deadening and electronics alongside a lighter exhaust, while new camshafts and a short-ratio gearbox honed its sporting characteristics. This example shows just 63,691 kilometres, making it a no-brainer for any collector of rare Porsches.

1991 Porsche 928 GT

The 928 enjoyed a remarkable 18-year production run, and 12 years in Porsche decided to give their V8 grand tourer a new lease of life with the 928 GT. Only available with a manual gearbox, the GT built upon the S4’s foundations with a more potent 330 horsepower engine and a ZF limited-slip differential as standard. Finished in Slate Grey Metallic over Classic Grey upholstery, this 928 GT is one you won’t have to shy away from driving thanks to its healthy mileage of 135,623 kilometres.

1993 Porsche 928 GTS

Saving arguably the best until last, we present this marvellous Oak Green Metallic 928 GTS: the ultimate incarnation of the breed. This car counts just two owners from new and is among just 2,900 928 GTSs that ever left Stuttgart. Boasting a subtly yet drool-worthy wide body and a 345 horsepower 5.4-litre V8, the GTS is undisputed king of 928s for good reason. This example has covered just 53,277 kilometres, a number we wouldn’t be able to resist adding to.
