Chassis No. 2W87Z7N224467
Sold new at Don Welch Motor Company of Lock Haven, Pennsylvania, this 1977 Trans Am represents one of Pontiac's most well remembered and iconic designs. The car was ordered with the W72 code T/A 400 cu-in (6.6L) V8 with a four-barrel carburetor mated to a four-speed automatic transmission. Standard equipment on all 1977 Trans Ams include the Safe-T-Track limited-slip differential, variable ratio power steering, rally gauges, power brakes, and the power flex fan. It was specified in Starlight Black (19) with gold decals from the Y90 custom trim group over a Firethorn Red cloth interior. The Trans Am was also optioned with steel belted radial tires, Soft Ray glass, the lamp group with a luggage compartment, glove compartment, interior panel courtesy lights, front and rear floor mats, a Delco AM/FM radio, and a rear seat speaker. The most expensive single option was the Y82 Special Edition Package invoiced at just over $1,000, which included the "Hurst Hatch" removable glass roof panels, gold cast aluminum wheels, gold interior and exterior appointments, gold stripes and emblems, and the iconic hood decal. These options added nearly $1,500 or 27-percent to the base price, pushing the total purchase price to just under $7,100 when new, as noted on a copy of its original window sticker.
Harkening back to a simpler time when Burt Reynolds and Jerry Reed headed west bound and down, in pursuit of beer in Texarkana, the Trans Am Special Edition is an undisputed icon of America. Today, this Trans Am is a living testament to the "Smokey and the Bandit" era, an example that has benefitted from careful enthusiast ownership throughout its life and a well executed restoration completed in the past. It displays just over 22,400 indicated miles, a figure which may well be original considering its fine condition. The Trans Am is complete with a copy of its original window sticker as well as Pontiac Historical Society (PHS) Documentation and some service records. Rarely seen in such splendid condition, this Trans Am Y82 Special Edition is a beautiful example of Pontiac's premier performance offering of its day.
