Chassis No. 185343902
Ford's 1940 model year brought several innovative features and a body design that many consider the pinnacle of the company's prewar styling. Among the most notable technical advancements was the relocation of the gearshift lever from the floor to the steering column. This modern shift not only made driving more convenient but also freed up valuable front-seat legroom for passengers.
In addition, Ford introduced sealed-beam headlights, which were significantly improved over the earlier design. These new headlights, positioned at the front of the fenders, also integrated parking lights within the same housing, blending Ford's previous covered-headlight look with the greater efficiency and durability of the sealed-beam technology. The combination of these technical innovations and the sleek, distinctive styling made the 1940 Ford models-especially the De Luxe Convertible-one of the most sought-after and cherished prewar Fords.
This particular De Luxe Convertible was restored prior to being added to The Academy of Art University Collection in 2009. Leaving virtually no aspect untouched, the restoration earned an Antique Automobile Club of America (AACA) Senior National First Prize in 1993, as well as the highly coveted Dearborn Award from the Early Ford V-8 Club. Finished in Lyon Blue, the interior is finely finished in dark brown leather upholstery. The woodgrained dashboard has been outfitted with a correct-style AM radio. The tan convertible top is reported to have been installed by Dan Most and is complete with a matching boot for use when it is lowered. Attention to detail is apparent with correct Ford script 6.00-16 4-ply wide whitewall tires, Ford De Luxe hubcaps, Ford branded hoses, and an authentic radiator.
Today, the odometer shows just 570 miles, which have been covered since the completion of its restoration. As a result, this splendid 1940 Ford De Luxe Convertible Club Coupe remains in superb condition and must surely be one of the finest examples currently on offer.
