It was BMW‘s 1600 saloon of 1966, with new two-door, medium-sized bodywork, that really sealed the German manufacturer‘s path on the road to success. Already the company‘s four cylinder, overhead camshaft engine and MacPherson strut front and coil spring/trailing arm rear suspension had been proved in its larger four door saloons, and when this was allied to the new 02 Series 1600 it was a recipe well received. Faster derivatives soon joined the 85bhp 1600: first came the twin carburettor 105bhp 1600ti of 1967 and then the extremely popular 2002 launched in January 1968.
