Description

1991 GTD Ford GT40 Coupé
Chassis No. 23690UK
Registered: Q678 GFX
Mileage: 6,305

Besley Heritage are pleased to offer this highly desirable 1991 GTD Ford GT40, a well-built example of one of the UK’s most respected GT40 recreation manufacturers. Registered correctly as a GTD GT40, chassis no. 23690 was constructed by GT Developments in Dorset, UK— a firm that became one of the leading names in the space during the late 1980s and early 1990s, producing c. 400 examples known for their strong chassis, reliable performance, and accurate proportions. Originally a UK-registered, RHD car, it was sold in 2018 and subsequently joined a collection in Italy.

Powered by a Ford 302ci (5.0-litre) V8 with a Holley 4-barrel carburettor, the engine received a top-end rebuild in 2016, which included new Edelbrock Performer RPM cylinder heads, intake manifold, rocker boxes, and a general engine tidy. The power is transmitted through a high-performance clutch to the five-speed UN1 gearbox, with the preferred cable-shift system ensuring a positive gear selection. The car is equipped with twin fuel tanks, which are switchable from inside the car, and also benefits from an on-board fire extinguishing system and 4-point harness safety belts.

Finished in Gulf-style blue and orange, the bodywork is well aligned, with correct GT40 proportions and good panel fit. It sits on new 15″ BRM-replica GT40 alloys with Gulf Orange inserts and replica spinners, shod with Avon R15 tyres: 215/60 front and 295/50 rear — said to be the only ones that make the GT40 sit correctly. Braking is via AP Racing 4-pot callipers with vented discs at the front, and indirect servo assist at both the front and rear, ensuring responsive braking.

Inside, the cabin retains the GT40’s minimal, period-correct feel, with fixed-back bucket seats, harnesses, a full set of analogue instruments, toggle switches, and a neatly mounted Kenwood stereo in the door pocket. The car also features central locking with an alarm.

On the road, the car is responsive and direct. Power delivery is strong and predictable, and the chassis is balanced at both low and high speeds. The car is offered with its original UK V5C, a file of invoices and well documented history, and a strong collection of past MOT’s, aswell as the relevant Italian documentation.

Chassis 23690 is a very well-sorted example with low mileage and a sensible, usable specification — ideal for someone looking to enjoy a GT40, whether as a grand tourer or an out-and-out track day car.

Additional Details:

Build type and registration: The car was originally assembled as a complete vehicle and not sold as a self-build or part-finished kit, implying a higher standard of construction and improved long-term reliability. It is correctly registered as a GTD GT40 on the V5C.

Cooling system upgrade: The radiator was upgraded in 2016 to an aluminium unit, which is an important improvement for GT40 cooling issues — particularly useful for both road use and track sessions.

Mileage at rebuild: The engine rebuild was completed at 6,000 miles (it’s covered only a few hundred miles since), which supports the condition and lack of wear.

Tyres: The car is fitted with Avon CR6ZZ tyres, road-legal but track-focused, the correct choice for both period look and performance.
