Ford GT40-P-1090 Mk V - JW Eng. - Safir Eng. - GT40 Production Ended & Then Started Again!
Ford GT40P-1090, the first GT 40 Mk V produced with an open roof panel rather than roofed doors. Who was involved? Peter Thorp, John Willment, John Wyer, Len Bailey, Bill Pink, John Etheridge, Brian Winfield of Ford, Brian Angliss of AC Cars. As agreed and signed off by the legendary Walter Hayes, then Vice President of Ford Motor Company, JW Engineering/Safir and Ford agreed the Mark V GT 40 would be described as "GT 40 Powered by Ford." Having the trademark GT40 given to them to protect for the future says it all!
History:
-#1090 is the first Safir Engineer car belonging to Peter Thorpe, the founder of SAFIR. This car figured in some press releases when Peter started SAFIR.
-Purchased from Peter Thorp in the 1990's by a French Industrialist. As per a gentleman who was employed at the time, "we bought 1090 from Peter. I did at least 3000 miles in the car going to race meetings & car shows. It has a Mathwall engine with Gurney Weslake heads & was an excellent road car. We sold the car via Peter into the USA when things got tight for my French employer. The build quality was excellent, it had around 20000 miles when we sold it."

Having been road test recently, we can confirm this GT40 is superb to drive, fun and extremely fast. Better yet, in comparison to a enclosed cockpit GT40 which at slow speeds and without proper ventilation can be a great place to asphyxiate yourself, this GT40 with Roadster bodywork is a joy to drive, not only when driven or raced in anger, but also when being driven for touring pleasure.
While in its most recent collector ownership, Ford GT40-P-1090 Mk V has been cared for by the collection in-house staff. It has been serviced, when and where needed to keep in exceptional and ready to use condition. It has been exercised regularly here in Long Islands Hamptons and has been been shown from time to time at various concours events.
On offer is a piece of Ford and its GT40's later history.
