The history of BMW is fascinating, to say the least. Founded in the early 1900s as an aircraft engine manufacturer, it began after World War I to produce cars and motorbikes. Great people have been part of its history, such as Camillo Castiglioni, Paul Rosche and Alex von Falkenhausen, who have created true legends on four and two wheels. Despite the valour of these great men of motoring, BMW faced a serious crisis in the post-war period, where its fate seemed to be forever sealed. Unexpectedly, after the failure of the prestigious 8-cylinder range, BMW found itself on the upswing thanks to the acquisition of an Italian subcompact car project, the Iso Isetta.
Quite the opposite of the Munich company's sporty DNA, the Isetta succeeded in re-establishing BMW as a leader and reviving the company's fortunes. The complete counterpoint to the company's sports car and prestige car philosophy, the Isetta was to all intents and purposes a three-wheeled, closed-body scooter. Small, beautiful and as practical as it was noisy and suited to everyday life in the 1950s and 1960s, the Isetta is proof that sometimes simplicity and likability are enough to be successful.
This 1961 example is one of the last Isettas built. Powered by the 300cc 4-stroke engine with 13 horsepower, it underwent a complete restoration in 2006 and has been in the same collection since 2016. The car is fully functional and has been used regularly for short trips. Iconically painted in Turquoise, it will give joy wherever it goes.
