The Red Bull RB17 is here to take names and break track records

Today, Goodwood Festival of Speed was the stage for the unveiling of the latest Adrian Newey-designed hypercar: meet the V10-powered Red Bull RB17.

If you even have the slightest interest in motorsport, you’ll probably know of Adrian Newey as the man responsible for designing the F1 cars that bagged Red Bull six World Constructors’ Championships and three World Drivers’ Championships for Max Verstappen. After leading the design and development of the otherworldly Aston Martin Valkyrie, Newey is ready to present his latest, most insane creation yet: the Red Bull RB17.

Powered by a naturally-aspirated Cosworth-built 4.5-litre V10 capable of revving to a mind-boggling 15,000 rpm, the RB17’s total power output sits at a mighty 1,200 horsepower thanks to the assistance of a 200 hp e-motor. Perhaps unsurprisingly based on its appearance, the RB17 is a track-only weapon, and Newey is confident that the RB17 will produce contemporary F1 car-rivalling lap times. With a target weight of just 900kg and projected downforce figures exceeding 1,700kg at 150mph — and a total lack of the rules that F1 cars must adhere to — we wouldn’t dare bet against it.

Just 50 examples of the RB17 will ever be made, each fetching a whopping 5,000,000 pounds, but it’s a small price to pay to embarrass Valkyrie owners at your local track day. In fact, Newey himself said “This is the next level, several levels to be honest, on in terms of its performance,” so it’s safe to say it the RB17 won’t be a slouch.
