Hyundai’s on the juice - meet the unhinged Insteroid!

Hyundai’s concept cars have not disappointed in the last few years, and for April Fool’s Day they have revealed their latest mad science project: meet the Insteroid!

If you’re a Classic Driver reader you probably haven’t even the slightest clue what a Hyundai Inster is or looks like, but that’s about to change because they’ve just turned their electric hatchback into a time attack machine ripped straight from our wildest race fuel-induced fever dreams. Introducing the perfectly-named Hyundai Insteroid

Hyundai claim the Insteroid was crafted in secrecy by their European design team, and we believe them because there’s no way their accounting department would have allowed such lunacy. “From its bold visual language to the immersive sound experience, it’s a concept that invites everyone to dream a little louder and smile a little longer,” says Head of Hyundai Design Center, Simon Loasby.

It would be simpler to list what hasn’t changed from the production model to create the Insteroid, but in short it boasts an extended, widened body, track-optimised wheels, a whopping great rear wing and diffuser, and equally pumped-up arches. Inside the stripped-out cockpit, you’ll find bucket seats, a roll cage, an enticing hydraulic hand brake lever, and a custom instrument cluster that can be fully adjusted by the driver. Oh, and let’s not forget the mammoth ‘Hyundai Beat House’ sound system in the boot.

Currently the Insteroid sits firmly in concept territory, which means there’s no word of power figures or lap times, but we hope this hints at a future Hyundai Inster hot hatch. Either way, as far as April Fool’s Day pranks go, this is up there with our favourites.
