The Austin-Healey 3000 was built from 1959 to 1967 and is the affectionately known of the ‘big’ Healey models.

The bodies were produced by Jensen Cars in West Bromwich and the vehicles were assembled at the old BMC Abingdon plant in Oxfordshire.

Originally fitted with a torquey 2912cc engine and twin SU’s, the MkII version was introduced in March ’61 with triple SUs, but it was the Mk III version in October ’63 that set the real performance and luxury standards.

Classified as the BJ8, the model was the most powerful and luxurious of the big Healeys, with a walnut-veneered dash, wind-up windows, and a 150hp engine.

In competition, the car was to become legendary and won its class in many European rallies, with notable results at Le Mans, Sebring, Mount Panorama and the Monte Carlo rally.

The Healey 3000 is still used in competition by enthusiasts today.

The BMC Competitions Department successfully rallied the 3000 from its introduction, but the development of the works cars effectively ended in 1965, mainly because of the success of the Mini Cooper ‘S’.

ABOUT THIS SPECIFIC EXAMPLE

This particular ‘Big Healey’ was despatched on the 22nd of May 1964 and was subsequently exported to the United States.

It was delivered to the warm dry climate of Compton, in southern Los Angeles, California.

This impressive Austin Healey 3000 Mark III is finished in desirable Ice Blue with a complementing dark blue interior and soft top.

The look is completed with a lovely set of chrome wire wheels and period wooden steering wheel.

The Heritage Certificate confirms its options were wire wheels, overdrive, heater, adjustable steering column and laminated windscreen.

Some years ago, this stunning Healey received a ground-up, nut-and-bolt restoration in the Netherlands.

The Healey underwent an extensive mechanical overhaul that saw it fitted with numerous A H Spared LTD-supplied parts.

During the restoration, there was chosen to make the car in this very particular shade of Blue.

A photographic record was kept of all the work done and the Healey is accompanied by a photobook of the car undergoing restoration, a driver’s handbook, tonneau cover and spare wheel.

Due to the fact that the Healey has not been used often since the restoration, the car seems to be just finished.

CONDITION EXTERIOR

The attention to detail is quite impressive, with exquisite Light Blue paint laid down on a beautifully straight and crisp body.

The doors open and shut with ease, pointing to a properly restored body shell. Like the gorgeous paint, the brightwork is also superb.

CONDITION INTERIOR

The gorgeous presentation continues when you open the doors, revealing supple Blue tan leather covering the seats, door cards, and center console.

The same beautiful leather repeats on the dash top, rear seats and quarter panels.

Blue carpeting provides a pleasing visual match.

The interior feels remarkably fresh since the restoration.

Correct Smiths dials and original switchgear sit in a glossy burl wood dash.

A black canvas hood keeps out the weather on less than perfect days, with a matching tonneau and top boot.

ENGINE BAY

The engine bay is comprehensively detailed to show-quality standards, with correct wiring, plumbing, and hardware.

Decals and labels are present, and the paint quality of the engine and ancillaries is very nice.

The engine has benefit from a very recent overhaul from which pictures are coming with the car.

DRIVING EXPERIENCE

We have had quite some Healey’s over the years because they look beautiful and they drive very well.

This particular big Healey drives as well as it looks with a tight and well-sorted feel on the road.

The overall handling is very easy. The shifting is easy with good synchros. The clutch takes up smoothly and the car can really be raced but also be driven on a relaxed way.

This Big Healey is a capable and enjoyable driver, offering all the thrills of a classic British roadster in a desirable specification.
