Story

Birth of the Series 3

In the early 1970s, Jaguar sought to modernize the E-Type and cater to a growing demand for more powerful, comfortable, and refined sports cars. The S3 was introduced in 1971. It marked a significant evolution from its predecessors, both mechanically and stylistically.

At the heart of the Series 3 was Jaguar's 5.3-liter V12 engine, a marvel of engineering that had roots in Jaguar's racing program. This engine made the cars stand out in performance, delivering smooth power and a thrilling driving experience.

The V12 engine produced 272 horsepower and an impressive torque figure, making the car effortless to drive, even at low revs.

The automatic transmission (typically a Borg-Warner unit) made the Roadster more accessible to a broader market, especially in the United States. It offered smooth shifts and complemented the V12's torque-heavy nature.

To handle the increased power and weight, the Series 3 was built on a slightly longer wheelbase, providing improved stability and ride comfort.

Wider track and uprated suspension helped maintain the car’s reputation for excellent handling.

She featured a larger front grille, flared wheel arches, and updated bumpers to meet safety regulations.

The Roadster retained the classic open-top design, offering a stunning silhouette with a blend of elegance and aggression.

It was more of a grand tourer than the earlier E-Types, with leather upholstery, power steering, and improved interior space.

The automatic variant appealed to drivers who prioritized comfort over the sportier feel of the manual transmission.

The Series 3 was particularly well-received in the U.S., where the automatic gearbox and emphasis on luxury matched market demands. While purists sometimes lamented its departure from the lightweight, nimble nature of the original Series 1, the Series 3 found favor with those who appreciated its refinement and power.

Capable of 0-60 mph in about 6.8 seconds and with a top speed of 145 mph, the V12 Roadster was no slouch, even with the automatic gearbox.
