The 1974 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia (Type 14) is a quintessential vintage classic, from 1955 to 1974, the Karmann Ghia is renowned for its distinctive design, which combines Italian styling with German engineering. By 1974, the model had undergone significant refinement, incorporating enhancements such as more powerful engine options, a 12-volt electrical system, and front disc brakes. The Karmann Ghia attracted drivers seeking a versatile and enjoyable driving experience in both coupe and convertible configurations. The car's legacy is further supported by Volkswagen's extensive global network of dealerships and service centers and the availability of aftermarket parts, ensuring the Karmann Ghia's continued popularity among collectors and enthusiasts.
Purchased by the current owner in 2013, this 1974 Karmann Ghia has benefitted from a comprehensive restoration by Motorcar Manor of Ramsey, New Jersey, in that was completed in 2023. The original numbers matching 1,600-cc dual port flat-four engine was rebuilt by specialists at Olson's Engines of Nyack, New York. Stripped to a bare shell, the body was refinished in its originally specified color of Olympic Blue (L 51 P). Once the paintwork was complete, attention was turned to the interior, where Motorcraft Limited of East Rutherford, New Jersey, reupholstered the seats with new padding, springs, and covers in the original specified Black vinyl, along with installing a loop-style carpeting. Lastly a modern RetroSound Bluetooth head unit and speaker.
Restored Karmann Ghias, particularly the Convertibles, remain highly sought after today, with this matching numbers example having the added benefit of being restored to its original, as delivered specification as noted on its factory-issued Volkswagen Zertifikat. Representing one of approximately 2,500 final model year examples, this car is offered with its original owner's manual, VW sales brochure, and a binder of restoration receipts and photos.
