Dr. Rudolph A. Light was a prominent neurosurgeon from Nashville, Tennessee, and heir to the Upjohn pharmaceutical company. In 1958, he traveled to England as a visiting surgeon at Oxford University, where he took delivery of this special coachbuilt Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud I with one of the rarest body styles offered by James Young in London on 16 July 1958. In the post-war era, James Young was the only coachbuilder to offer a modern interpretation of the distinctive Sedanca Coupe. It features a unique design where the front chauffeur's compartment features a sliding, retractable roof while the rear passenger compartment remains fully enclosed. As a result of its "off the books" nature, only two Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud I chassis featured James Young's custom Sedanca Coupe coachwork.
Dr. Light retained the car until 1960, when it was purchased by pioneering plastic surgeon and former Rolls-Royce Owner's Club President Dr. Samuel L. Scher. Dr. Scher had a passion for custom-bodied Rolls-Royce and acquired both Cloud I James Young Sedanca Coupes. He upgraded them to his personal specifications with FLM Panelcraft, a fitting choice since it was founded by former James Young staff members. Work to LSF E99 included removing the rear side windows and replacing them with landau bars, reducing the size of the rear window, and installing a set of auxiliary Lucas P-100 lights.
Later retiring in Palm Beach, Florida, the car garnered admiration from Dr. Scher's neighbor, who eventually purchased it from him in 1972. The car was then acquired by Vantage Motorworks in September 1986. After earning a first-place award at the 1991 Chicago Invitation Concurs d'Elegance the car was once again purchased by Vantage Motorworks in 1993 and retained the car for the next five years and painted the car regal red over garnet. It then passed through a chain of enthusiast owners until it was purchased by the current owner in 2018. Since Dr. Scher's upgrades in the 1960s, additions include a modern Blaupunkt radio and a trunk-mounted air conditioning system. Today, this rare 1958 Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud I Sedanca Coupe by James Young remains in excellent condition and is offered with four cut crystal shot glasses, a pair of flasks, and copies of its original build sheets.
