- Renault’s sporting rival to the Mini; the model that topped the Tour de Corse rally three times; re-engineered by ex-Formula 1 driver Amédée Gordini
- Presented in stunning French Racing Blue featuring dual white racing stripes
- Rear-mounted 1,255-cc four-cylinder engine delivers 110 horsepower to the rear wheels via a five-speed manual gearbox
- Ownership history in France; acquired by The Curated Collection in May 2015
Engineering ace Amédée Gordini ensured France remained competitive in top-tier motorsport immediately after World War II. The ex-Grand Prix driver then nearly doubled the power of the humble Renault R8 to create a Mini rival that won the famed Tour de Corse rally three times in succession between 1964 and 1966.
In a nod to the off-road success, a facelift R8 Gordini was introduced in 1966. It sported four headlights inspired by the spotlights worn by rally cars. An additional 150 cc rounded the rear-mounted four-cylinder engine up to 1.255 litres for an output of 110 horsepower. This was fed to the rear wheels via a five-speed manual gearbox. All Renault R8 Gordinis left the factory in French Racing Blue with a pair of white racing stripes.
This example was first registered in February 1969. Invoices (available to view on file) show that by 2010 it was owned on the Mediterranean coastline next to Marseille by a member of the Gendarmerie. Then in 2013, a new keeper moved the car to the Parisian suburbs before it joined The Curated Collection in Belgium in May 2015. This Renault R8 Gordini would make for an utterly charming addition to any motorsport-themed collection.
