The Geneva Motor Show in March 1963 marked the debut of Daimler-Benz's Type 230 SL, a significant event widely covered by the media. Positioned as a successor to both the popular 190 SL and the iconic 300 SL, the 230 SL faced a formidable challenge. Unlike its predecessors, which represented distinct design philosophies, the 230 SL aimed for a balanced approach. Codenamed "W113," it emerged as a comfortable two-seater GT car, blending performance with safety innovations.

Central to its design was the revolutionary safety body, incorporating stiff passenger cells and deformable zones-a concept pioneered by Béla Barényi, previously used in "fintail" sedans. The 230 SL's distinctive feature was its removable concave-shaped hood, known as the "pagoda," reflecting a form-follows-function principle. This design not only enhanced structural rigidity but also improved visibility and accessibility through its large side windows.

In February 1967, the 250 SL debuted with similar external styling but featured upgrades in engine power and brakes. It was quickly succeeded by the 280 SL, boasting a 2.8-liter engine with enhanced performance, further refining the SL series. Despite minor exterior distinctions, such as wheel trim, the 280 SL effectively continued the legacy of its predecessors, setting new benchmarks in the GT car segment with its blend of style, comfort, and driving dynamics.

This exquisite U.S.-specification 280 SL is presented in a period-correct Dark Red (542) finish, beautifully paired with a Cognac Leather (250) interior and coordinated carpeting. What truly distinguishes this car is its exceptionally rare Golde electric sliding steel sunroof, seamlessly integrated into the removable hard top, allowing for an open-air driving experience-hardtop on or off. The meticulous restoration by acclaimed specialist Jürgen Klockemann has brought this car to its current splendid condition, with virtually every component, including the engine and automatic transmission, expertly renewed. Today, this car not only commands attention for its impeccable presentation but also for its intriguing sunroof, a feature seldom found elsewhere, making it a truly exceptional collector's piece.
