Beschreibung
The W116, as the new model came to be known, was Friedrich Geiger's last design for Mercedes-Benz.
His career began with the Mercedes-Benz 500K back in 1933.
The new model was unveiled in September 1972. The model range initially included two versions of the M110 engine (straight-six with 2746 cc displacement) — the 280S (with Solex carburettor) and the 280SE (with Bosch D-Jetronic injection), plus the 350SE, which powered by the M116 engine (V8 with 3499 cc displacement).
After the 1973 oil crisis, a 280SEL with a long wheelbase was also added to the model range.
Mercedes-Benz W116 var den första modellen som företaget officiellt kom att kalla S-klass. Det är samtidigt den sista modellen där kromlister och kromdetaljer kom att vara de avgörande designdetaljerna hos Mercedes.
In September 1980, the last W116 rolled out of the factory. By then, Mercedes had produced a total of
473 035 cars. The last to be produced was a 300 SD with turbodiesel, a
model that was intended for the American market.
The model was focused on safety and robustness. Which is clearly noticeable. Jokingly (but well in line with reality), it used to be said that the car lasted, all the way from the factory to the scrapyard. Therefore, today it can be difficult to find a low mileage and nice example of this model.
We now have the pleasure of presenting just such a example. A Swedish-sold Mercedes-Benz 280SE, from 1977. With only two previous owners and only approx. 50.000km on the odometer.
The car was sold new by Philipsons in Uppsala (a few miles from Stockholm), to "housewife" Eva D, on March 17, 1978. She then used the car carefully until she sold it on in 2017 to a gentleman, also living in Östhammar.
This 280SE is painted in "Milan Brown Metallic" and the interior is covered with Mercedes-Benz REX upholstery in a period pattern. The car is very well preserved and well taken care of over the years. Since the car was new, all seats have been equipped with protective covers. Which means that the seats are as good as new.
The oldest preserved inspection report is dated June 1986. By then the car had traveled 42.730 km. The last inspection was done in June 2023, with an odometer reading of 53.120 km. Thus, the car has rolled approx. 10.000 km in the last 37 years.
The car is also equipped with period baroque rims, which were a cool option at the time.
The car comes with instruction manuals, warranty certificate, delivery card and a lot of other documents in its original form.
