Launched in 1994 as the final evolution of the vaunted Testarossa, the F512 M, or Modificata, is the last mid-engine production Ferrari to feature the company’s legendary horizontally opposed 12-cylinder engine. As the culmination of a celebrated lineage extending back to Pininfarina’s 365 GT4/BB concept at the 1971 Turin Auto Show, every aspect of the updated model was refined from the previous version. Numerous internal engine upgrades, including titanium connecting rods and other lightened components, along with increased compression, helped bump engine output to 440 horsepower—a noticeable boost over the preceding 512 TR.
Visually, the nose and tail of the car were revamped, with the most noticeable change being fixed headlamps in place of the classic pop-up units, which served to improve aerodynamics. The front bumper was updated, along with the taillights, while new wheels featured distinctive spiral-shaped spokes. The interior gained a new steering wheel, an alloy knob for the gearshift lever, adjustable aluminum foot pedals, an improved air-conditioning system, optional sport seats, and other trim details.
In total, just 501 F512 M examples were manufactured for worldwide distribution, making it not only the most highly developed of the Testarossa series but also the rarest.
This incredible example was sold new through Shelton Sports Cars of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, according to its accompanying original window sticker. It left the factory finished as it is today in red with a tan leather interior and equipped with power windows, door locks, side-view mirrors, anti-lock four-wheel ventilated disc brakes, five-speed manual transmission, limited-slip differential, air-conditioning, quartz clock, and stereo system.
Acquired by the consignor in January 2018, this F512 M benefits from an extensive, engine-out service completed in December 2024 at a cost of more than $122,000. The work included disassembling the engine, replacing and machining various mechanical components, and rebuilding it to factory specifications. Invoices for the work are on file.
Finished in quintessential Ferrari colors and sparingly driven its whole life, with less than 22,000 miles on the odometer as of cataloguing time, it will be hard to find a more appealing example of this rare supercar, coveted by marque enthusiasts for its significance as the final mid-engine production Ferrari powered by the automaker’s legendary flat 12-cylinder engine.
