Beschreibung
Building on the momentum of the highly successful four-seat 250 GTE, Ferrari expanded and refined its road car range throughout the 1960s. The celebrated 250 series models were gradually phased out, replaced by the larger-capacity, road-focused 275 and 330 model lines. At Ferrari’s traditional January press conference in 1964, the all-new successor to the 250 GTE was formally announced and shown. Dubbed the 330 GT 2+2, Ferrari’s new four-place model featured elegant and modern styling penned by the American-born designer Tom Tjaarda, who was then working for Pininfarina in Torino.
A strong performer worthy of transcontinental jaunts, the 330 GT 2+2 was powered by Ferrari’s tipo 209, Colombo-derived V-12 engine, displacing 4.0 liters and developing 300 hp at 6,600 rpm, mated to a four-speed manual gearbox with overdrive. Reputedly, the 330 GT 2+2 ranked among Enzo Ferrari’s favorite automobiles bearing his name. Driving dynamics were enhanced by four-wheel disc brakes and KONI adjustable dampers all around. Three iterations of the 330 GT 2+2 are recognized: 505 Series I cars built for 1963–1965, with canted four-headlamp frontal treatment and four-speed gearbox plus overdrive; 120 Interim models for 1965, with the original canted-headlamp design and five-speed gearbox; and 460 Series II cars, with a revised two-headlamp design and five-speed gearbox for 1965–1967.
This Series II 1966 Ferrari 330 GT 2+2, chassis 8639, is an original US model, completed on June 18, 1966, and desirably equipped with optional power window lifts and air-conditioning. Finished in Ivory over Cloud Blue leather upholstery and fitted with wire-spoke wheels, 8639 was imported to the US by Luigi Chinetti Motors Inc. While the first owner remains unknown, by July 1970, chassis 8639 was owned by H. Michael Balch of California, before passing through the hands of several successive California owners over the next two decades. By 1986, the Ferrari sported a Black exterior finish over Red upholstery. From 1991 to 2003, the 2+2 resided in Japan with a noted classic-car collector. In February 2003, the vehicle returned to the US and was acquired by Jim Unsworth of Arizona, who in August 2008 sold the car to noted entertainer, sports car collector, and enthusiast Adam Carolla. Under Mr. Carolla’s care, the Ferrari was featured in an August 2012 episode of the popular television and web series, Jay Leno’s Garage. In 2017, the consignor acquired the sophisticated Ferrari GT.
Accompanying items include a factory tool roll, 330 GT Registry vehicle history, and a copy of the Ferrari 330 GT Operating, Maintenance, and Service Handbook. One of the most successful, classic “Enzo era” Ferrari V-12 GT cars, this is a wonderfully presented 330 GT 2+2.
