The 250 GTE was conceived by Ferrari as a means to put its successful 250 model platform into series production, and the popularity of the stylish 2+2 was a major contributor to the Italian marque’s commercial success in the 1960s. This example, chassis 4659, was completed by the Ferrari factory on 18 May 1963, driving off the production line as the 178th of 300 Series III examples. Of all three 250 GTE series, this was the 829th built of 954 cars.

The Ferrari was delivered new to Luigi Chinetti Motors of New York, United States, finished in Blu Chiaro over a Pelle Nuvola interior. It is documented by marque expert, Marcel Massini, that the 250 GTE was once finished in dark metallic red with retrimmed black leather. Massini also reports that the car spent decades in storage in California. After its years of static preservation, the car was acquired by Gullwing Motor Co of Astoria, New York, in March 2017. It was advertised for sale one month later, described as being in need of restoration and finished in burgundy with a black interior.

Subsequently returned to its factory-correct colour combination, and Ferrari Classiche-certified in March 2021, this attractive 250 GTE 2+2 Series III gives buyers a brilliant opportunity to acquire one of Ferrari’s 1960s greats.
