Chrysler's "letter series" cars, especially the 300 series, were pivotal in the evolution of American performance vehicles, with high-speed capabilities and laying the groundwork for the muscle car era. With a rich racing heritage dating back to the 1920s, Chrysler's commitment to performance culminated in the 1950s with the introduction of the C-300 and 300 B, which earned victories in events like NASCAR and throughout the South. By 1958, the 300 D featured an enlarged 392 cubic-inch Hemi V8 producing 380 horsepower, enabling the large, heavy car to accelerate to 60 miles per hour in under nine seconds and reach top speeds of over 130 mph. With just 809 units produced for 1958-including 191 convertibles priced at a hefty $5,173-the 300 D represented the pinnacle of Chrysler's performance and luxury engineering, marking the end of the FirePower Hemi built by Mercury Marine in the 300 series.
This car received a comprehensive and detailed restoration by Bob Lorkowski's L'Cars Automotive Specialties of Bruce, Wisconsin, to its factory specification. With the body off the frame, this was a nut and bolt restoration that included refinishing the body in Ermine White over a Tan leather interior. The car rides on period-correct B.F. Goodrich white wall tires with the correct style stainless steel turbine-style hubcaps with red accents. Features include the pushbutton Torque Flite automatic transmission, power steering, and power brakes. Optional equipment includes factory cruise control, air conditioning, power seat controls, and an AM radio with the rarely seen Highway Hi-Fi in-car record player mounted beneath the dashboard. Completing the car are numerous red, white, and blue 300 D emblems used throughout the car as a reminder of its performance pedigree.
Extremely rare with a low survival rate, only 191 examples of this striking Virgil Exner-designed convertibles were ever produced, ensuring that these powerful examples remain highly collectible today, especially when presented in such superb condition as this car. Having never been shown, it gives the next owner the opportunity to be a nearly automatic winner of an AACA National First Prize at its first showing.
