From its very first days in the early 1950s, the idea of a Corvette coupe had floated around GM, yet it would be a full decade before Bill Mitchell and Larry Shinoda's aerodynamic coupe design would emerge. It proved to be well worth the wait. The new fiberglass bodies of both the new C2-generation coupe and convertible were placed on an extensively revamped chassis, showcasing Corvette's latest four-wheel independent suspension, skillfully developed by the talented Zora Arkus-Duntov. Naturally, the Corvette relied on V8 power and it was offered with a selection of four 327 cu-in "Power Teams" from a standard 250 horsepower V8 to an optional version with 360 fuel-injected horsepower. While the new "Fuelie" garnered technical praise, many, including the motoring press, preferred the optional "L76" 340 horsepower variant with its four-barrel Carter carburetor, high-flow air cleaner, special camshaft, and mechanical lifters. In that high state of tune, Arkus-Duntov's "America's Sports Car" had become a formidable sports car on the world's stage.
For many collectors, the new 1963 Chevrolet Corvette is best appreciated clothed in its new "split window" coupe bodywork. While it would remain for only one year, the impact of the Sting Ray coupe was nothing short of remarkable with most collectors in agreement that it stands as the pinnacle of Corvette design. A glance at the aluminum serial number tags located under glove box reveal that this 1963 Corvette Sting Ray Coupe's split window body was produced in 936 Ermine White with a Red upholstered interior. The body completion date of 3 February 1963 aligns with known monthly production numbers with the final six digits indicating final assembly in the middle of February. The two-part engine pad serial number stamp 3108769 F0204RE indicates that this engine was built at Chevrolet's Flint, Michigan plant on the 4 February 1963 with the last two characters "RE" signifying the engine specification as a 327 cu-in 340 horsepower V8 with a four-speed manual transmission.
The subject of a body-off restoration some years ago which is documented by photographs in the accompanying history file, it is equipped with a tinted windshield, Delco pushbutton radio, heater and defroster, correct Spinner wheel covers, and Firestone Deluxe Champion tires. Formerly owned by renowned Corvette collector Charles Ungurean, receipts on file from 2022 and early 2023 show a partial body-off restoration commenced under his ownership totaling just over $20,000. The very straight split window body was removed from the frame and, while separated, the chassis saw the majority of attention with a suspension rebuild, refinishing of various components, and fuel and brake line replacement among other work. At the same time, the potent L76 V8 received a reseal and it, the bellhousing, and the transmission were refinished. Accompanying this split window Sting Ray are an owner's manual, jack, and CCAS certificates for both the all-important engine block numbers and trim tag.
