Story
The Z1 marks the brand's return to this type of bodywork.
The car was based on the mechanics of the BMW 325i E30.
Its bodywork was innovative. It was made of composite materials.
The doors retracted into the car's side panels.
The Z1 could be likened to a rolling prototype.
This meant that the interior and exterior finishes were somewhat fragile.
Production was limited. As a result, the model quickly acquired collector's status.
Production site was in Munich, Germany.
The galvanised steel body was produced by coachbuilder Baur.
Production figures: 8,000 examples, of which only one was right-hand drive.
This figure does not include the 12 prototypes produced between 1986 and 1987.
The car's main innovation was its composite body panels.
The electrically retractable side doors were also an original feature.
The car could be driven with the doors lowered.
Its multi-link rear axle, known as the Z-axle, was a first.
The Z1 also featured elliptical headlamps.
