Nach dem Krieg hatte BMW das Werk Eisenach (wo bis dahin alle BMW PKW gebaut wurden) an die Sowjetunion verloren.

Umso erstaunter war das Publikum, als auf der IAA 1951 mit dem Barockengel eine neue Luxuslimousine des bayrischen Herstellers präsentiert wurde.

Der Motor des BMW 502 war der erste jemals von BMW gebaute Achtzylinder und zugleich der erste Pkw-Achtzylinder aus deutscher Produktion nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg.

Die Fa. Baur in Stuttgart lieferte BMW von Beginn an die Karosserien. Eine eigene Produktion war aufgrund der relativ kleinen Produktionskapazitäten in München nicht möglich gewesen.

Als sich BMW einige Jahre später dann doch weitere Produktionshallen leisten konnte, überlegte sich Baur ab sofort Sonderaufbauten auf dem BWM-Fahrgestell anzubieten.

147 Cabriolets und Coupes wurden so bei Baur bestellt. Das Viertürige Cabriolet blieb die absolute Rarität. Nur 19 respektive 20 Fahrzeuge wurden gebaut, davon wiederum nur etwa die Hälfte mit V8.

Unser Fahrzeug wurde 1955 von der Firma Ferdinand Muehlens Kölnisch Wasser 4711 in Köln Ehrenfeld bestellt.

Eine Kopie des alten Pappdeckelbriefs liegt uns vor.

Ab 1965 befand sich der BMW in Bad Tölz wo er u.a. als Hochzeitswagen genutzt wurde.

Vor ca. 10 Jahren erwarb der aktuelle Eigentümer das Auto im restaurierungsbedürftigen Zustand.

Über den Zeitraum von mehreren Jahren wurde das Cabriolet in sehr hoher Qualität restauriert und alle Arbeitsschritte fotografisch dokumentiert. Rechnungen von weit über 200.000 € zu den Arbeiten liegen vor.

After the war, BMW had lost the Eisenach plant (where all BMW passenger cars had been built until then) to the Soviet Union.

The public was all the more astonished when a new luxury sedan from the Bavarian manufacturer, the Barockengel, was presented at the 1951 IAA.

The engine of the BMW 502 was the first eight-cylinder ever built by BMW and also the first passenger car eight-cylinder from German production after the Second World War.

The Baur company in Stuttgart supplied BMW with the bodies right from the start. Due to the relatively small production capacities in Munich, it had not been possible for BMW to produce the car itself.

When BMW could afford additional production halls a few years later, Baur started to offer special bodies on the BMW chassis.

147 convertibles and coupes were ordered from Baur. The four-door convertible remained the absolute rarity. Only 19 respectively 20 cars were built, again only about half of them with V8.

Our car was ordered in 1955 by the company Ferdinand Muehlens Kölnisch Wasser 4711 in Cologne Ehrenfeld.

We have a copy of the old registration certificate.

From 1965 the BMW was in Bad Tölz where it was used, among other things, as a wedding car.

About 10 years ago, the current owner acquired the car in a state in need of restoration.

Over the period of several years, the convertible was restored to a very high quality and all work steps were documented photographically. Invoices of well over 200,000 € for the work are available.
