As Germany invested heavily in developing its Autobahn network prior to the outbreak of World War II, BMW capitalised on the growing demand for fast motorway cruisers. Powered by the 1,971-cc six-cylinder competition engine from the successful 328, the marque’s new 2+2 Sport Cabriolet was capable of 140 km/h.
Just 482 Cabriolets were constructed during a 1937 to 1940 production run, with this example sold to Stockholm in August 1939. However, due to the ongoing conflict, the car would not be registered for a further two years. As fuel fell into short supply, it is believed that this 327/28 Sport Cabriolet was subsequently equipped with a wood burner to power the engine. Purchased by The Munich Masterpieces Collection in 2009, this car was treated to a complete mechanical and body restoration before returning to the roads in August 2011.
Presented in two-tone grey and dark blue with a matching blue roof and hide, this 327/28 Sport Cabriolet is complemented by owner’s guides, Birth Certificate by BMW Classic, a tool kit, and cooper-head mallet.
