Among the most beautifully constructed automobiles ever conceived, the Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 occupies a cherished position in the history of coachbuilding and automotive excellence.
Produced from 1939 and after the war until 1951, the 6C 2500 was the last of the famous six cylinder cars first started with the 1928 6C 1500.
The pre-war cars could be ordered in several chassis lengths and various stated of tunes: Turismo (87 bhp), Sport (95 bhp), SS or Super Sport (105 bhp) and SS Corsa (125 bhp).
The car was powered by an Inline-6 engine that traced its roots back to the prewar competition models.
It was originally deigned by Vittorio Jano and was reengineered by Bruno Treviso to have a 2443cc displacement, improved cylinder head and a 7:1 compression ratio.
The top model was the Super Sport (SS) which had the shortest wheelbase for nimble handling and a triple carburettor engine capable of 105 bhp.
Pininfarina, Touring, Bertone, Vignale, Zagato with many others bodied the 6C 2500, and each gave the car their own style.
The Pininfarina cabriolet has a particularly glamorous design, having a wide bench seat offering room for three occupants, steering column mounted gear lever and winding side windows.
Pinin was the nickname of Battista Farina (1893-1966). He is revered as one of the world’s great masters of elegant shapes and one of the largest influences on post-war styling.
Alfa Romeo ambitiously raced the 6C 2300 and 2500 after their introduction, collecting an impressive range of victories and podium finishes including 1-2 in the 1937 Mille Miglia, 1-2-3 in the 1937 6 hour Targa Abruzzo at Pescara backed up by another Pescara win in 1938.
Total production of the 6C 2500 Super Sport was 458 units, of which 75 were built between 1939-1943 and 383 between 1947-1951.
According to the Fabio Morlacchi and Stefano Salvetti books, around 63 Super Sport Pinin Farina cabriolets like this example were manufactured after the war.
With such a pedigree it is not surprising that the Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 Super Sport should attract the attention of filmmakers, director/producer Joseph L Mankiewicz casting one in his 1954 movie, The Barefoot Contessa, in which it was driven by Humphrey Bogart alongside his co-star, Ava Gardner.
ABOUT THIS SPECIFIC EXAMPLE
After completion this extremely rare Alfa (1 of 63 Super Sport Pinin Farina cabriolets) was delivered during August 1950 to Mr. Edmondo Cornudet of Milan, Italy, who drove the car for the first years of its life.
The car was dispatched from the Alfa Romeo factory during August of 1950 and destined for the Swiss Alfa Romeo agent based in Lugano, Switzerland.
According to research compiled by a former owner, this very 6C 2500 Pinin Farina Cabriolet was the sole example delivered in the striking Black over Green livery, exactly as seen on the car today.
The car was purchased in Geneva, Switzerland in 1957, by Parisian gentleman, Monsieur Michel Pfau, who is believed to have been the second owner at that time.
A subsequent owner related that Mr. Pfau and two of his friends were avid jazz enthusiasts, and that the three of them toured in the fast and luxurious Alfa Romeo to posh destinations such as Cannes, Nice and Berlin, to attend Jazz festivals.
A photo of them taken around Cote d’Azur remains in the car’s impressive history file.
Mr. Pfau would keep the car until 2013, at which point he sold it to Italian car specialist Franco Meiners of Bergamo, Italy.
A restoration had been carried out during 2006 and 2012, with the original black paintwork redone in Novara, Italy, and mechanical systems refurbished in Torino, Italy.
During Mr. Meiners ownership, the striking Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 Super Sport Pinin Farina Cabriolet was displayed at various Concours d’elegance events, and at the 2014 Retromobile show in Paris, where Mr. Meiners was approached by Monsieur Pfau’s old Jazz who he had been photographed with in the car many years before. Mr. Pfau had sadly passed away just a week prior to Retromobile and had reportedly left his friends with the proceeds from sale of the car, with the instruction that they should spend it doing what they loved; attending Jazz concerts!
The Alfa Romeo was later sold in 2014 to America.
Thanks to Monsieur Pfau’s diligent record keeping, the impressive history file offered with the car dates back more than half a century, and is filled with many restoration photos, an abundance of receipts and records, and the cool old photos of the Pfau and his friends.
Importantly, the original engine remains in the car according to the Alfa Romeo 6C 2300-2500 registry.
CONDITION EXTERIOR
The car features an extremely straight, flawless exterior with a beautiful paint job. The paint has a beautiful deep shine. The fittings of the door, boot and bonnet are excellent.
No expense has been spared on this vehicle, evident in its exceptional condition.
The chrome is fully restored and shines like new, providing a beautiful contrast to the car’s exterior.
The windows are in a very nice condition as well without big signs of usage or damages.
Overall the condition of the exterior can be described as extremely beautiful but then we only describe the condition and not the looks of the car.
If you take a careful look at the shape of the body it is immediately clear that these cars were one of the nicest built in period.
CONDITION INTERIOR
The Alfa Romeo’s interior is in equally immaculate condition as its exterior.
The interior is period-correct restored and exudes an art-deco style, from the impressive gauges to the exquisite knobs and switches.
Sitting in this car is a true delight, as every inch of the interior begs for attention.
A period correct heater is fitted below the dashboard, which is trimmed with love Bakelite knobs and switchgear.
The thin steering wheel is flawlessly restored and complements the overall aesthetic.
The seats, carpet, doorcards, and soft top are all exceptionally nice restored, making it difficult to put into words the level of enthusiasm this car inspires.
It must be seen in person to fully appreciate its impeccable condition.
DRIVING EXPERIENCE
The car effortlessly starts, idles, and accelerates with a strong and smoke-free powertrain.
The four-speed transmission shifts smoothly and precisely, providing an enjoyable driving experience.
The chassis is agile, with precise steering and a taut suspension. The brakes are responsive, providing effective stopping power with minimal pull from side to side.
