The Ferrari 512 TR represents a sweet spot in the Testarossa family of mid-engine supercars, benefiting from numerous updates over the original model yet retaining the same visual panache that was somewhat lost in the succeeding F512 M. Truly fantastic to drive, with improved performance, drivability, practicality, and comfort compared to its predecessor, the 512 TR was built in far smaller numbers than the Testarossa, with just 2,280 examples compared to over 7,000 Testarossas.
This 512 TR is finished in black over red Connolly leather, a rare and striking combination. It was delivered new to Newport Imports, Inc. in Newport Beach, California, which sold the car to its first owner on 9 March 1992. A title document in the car’s history file indicates that a subsequent owner took possession in early 1999 after the car had been driven only 7,826 miles. It would remain in Los Angeles with this owner, sparingly driven, for 17 years, until acquired by the consignor in December 2018 and imported to Canada.
Immediately upon acquiring the 512 TR, the consignor sent it to Ferrari of Ontario for engine-out mechanical service and removal of copious aftermarket electronic componentry installed by a previous owner. An invoice on file dated December 2018 details extensive mechanical work totaling more than $32,000, which included changing the timing belt, replacing the clutch, performing a comprehensive tune-up with new fluids, auxiliary belts, air and fuel filters, spark plugs, and coolant hoses, correcting various oil leaks with new gaskets, seals, and O-rings, rebuilding the water pump and alternator, adjusting the valves, installing new Michelin Pilot Supersport tires, and performing a four-wheel alignment.
In January 2019, Ferrari of Ontario painstakingly removed the aftermarket gadgetry along with all corresponding wiring, relays, and switches, which required disassembling much of the interior and front cargo area trim. Great effort was taken to return all wiring and other components to factory specifications, as detailed in an invoice on file totaling $7,700.
Further work carried out in June 2020 by Ferrari of Ontario saw the fuel system overhauled, with both fuel pumps and all hoses replaced along with the engine’s two fuel-pressure regulators. This work, totaling more than $18,904, also included replacing the fuse box assembly and some of its wire connectors and terminals, which had been damaged by the increased electrical load created by the previously installed aftermarket electronics.
The car has rarely been driven since its comprehensive refurbishment to factory specifications, with the odometer showing just over 10,000 miles at cataloguing time. Well-documented history, low mileage, and a rare, desirable color combination make this 512 TR unusually appealing. It is accompanied by a history file which includes a copy of the original window sticker, factory manuals and warranty book, and service invoices dating back to 1995.
