Description

Maserati's long-selling supercar, Merak, was launched in 1972. Based on Bora, it was developed in collaboration with Citroën, the parent company of Maserati at the time, and the body design was by Giorgetto Giugiaro, the same designer as the Bora. It shared most of the body panels with the Bora, and the peculiar side window shape shows that the overall style was intended to be glamorous and rounded, but also to give the car a wedge image. To counter the heat from the midship-mounted engine, the engine hood was exposed to create a notch-back style and a ‘flying buttress’ design, which mimics the rear pillar of a fastback. The Merak is recognised as a 2+2 four-seater, but the rear seats are treated as occasional seats only.

The SS's engine is a 3-litre DOHC V6 developed by Maserati for the Citroën SM with an increased compression ratio (220 PS at 6,500 rpm and 28 kgm at 4,400 rpm). The chassis is a combination of steel monocoque and multi-tubular frame. Also, as this model has been produced since the end of the business partnership with Citroën, the hydro mechanism used in the Merak for the headlights and brakes is not fitted in the SS.

This Merak SS with Bora panel was the last Merak SS sitting in Maserati's factory. We asked Maserati to sell it for us and in 1983 we imported it as an official dealer.
From 1984 to 2022, owned by one family (father to son) and passed to other enthusiat, which means there are only 2 owners of this Merak since new. Still remaining original paint, and it has many cracks. Beautiful patina.
Last owner spent 3,000,000yen to set everything perfect. Last year engine/carburetor/steering gearbox/driveshaft completely overhauled. It runs so smooth now.
