The Mercedes-Benz W113 SL was developed under the auspices of Mercedes-Benz Technical Director Fritz Nallinger, Chief Engineer Rudolf Uhlenhaut and Head of Styling, Friedrich Geiger. The lead designers were Paul Bracq and Bela Barenyi who created its distinctive, patented, slightly concave hardtop which inspired the 'Pagoda' nickname. The model was manufactured from 1963 through to 1971 and boasted an in-line straight six-engine with multi-port fuel injection. The larger and more popular capacity 280 (2.8 litre) was introduced in 1967 and remained largely unchanged until 1971.

The example we have here is an original UK supplied example with an automatic gearbox, which was delivered in 1970 wearing the beautiful blue you see it in today. The car was specified as a California coupe when new, meaning it had no soft top fitted, though a new soft top using an original frame and brand new canvas was recently fitted, along with many other restoration jobs. A full bare metal respray has taken place, which has been finished to an impressive standard. The engine and chassis have both undergone much work, all using original parts from Pagodenteile in Germany. The car presents in excellent order now, though the final job on the list for our vendor would have been to retrim the interior, but it's time constraints have meant this will be a job for the new owner. The interior is useable as it is, but it would benefit from being brought up to the same level as the rest of the car. Supplied to auction with a V5C registration certificate and a history file bolstered with many invoices for works undertaken.Interested parties should note, the car will be supplied with glass fitted to the hard top, but it was not possible to have it fitted in time for the photography.Consigned by Fraser Smith
