Ignoring the voluptuous outline of the Aston Martin Volante, their eyes are pointedly fixed elsewhere. Perhaps they work in the fashion industry, and are simply taking a professional interest in 1960s hemlines? All except for the man on the left. Has he found something even more fascinating in the company accounts? Or is that his wife?
Why? Well, the vehicle in question was the Gemini 4 rocket, and White's excursion outside the capsule made him the first American to walk in space.
The remarkable images, snapped by Gemini 4's command pilot James McDivitt, show White floating in space attached to the craft only by the length of 'umbilical' cord which supplied him with oxygen. The mirror visor of his helmet makes it impossible to see the expression on his face - but there's no doubt that White was having fun, since he exceeded the time officially allotted for the walk and had to be ordered back inside.
The film was created using Cinema 4D software, the same used by manufacturers to create animated adverts for their latest cars. But Florian Renner instead uses it to recreate cult imagery of the past – with a soundtrack entitled ‘Synthpop Supercar’ providing the musical backdrop. I walked into the kitchen the other day and caught the tail end of a radio programme about the difference between the 'stars' of today and the stars of yesterday. First, as head of the Peugeot design department in the 1960s, he was responsible for the popular Peugeot 204, which will celebrate its 50th anniversary this year – more specifically, during the Parisian classic car week. He’s also one of the best-known automotive artists and three of his paintings will be offered at the Artcurial auction.
