Description
The Volkswagen Type 2 was introduced in 1950 as a multi-variant utility vehicle, known as the Transporter, Kombi or Microbus (depending on body type), and was devised as an evolution of the original Beetle. The first generation of these versatile vehicles (named the T1) was produced with distinctive splitscreens from 1950 until 1967. Only two models were originally offered, the Kombi and the Commercial, the Microbus was added in May 1950, and was joined by the Deluxe Microbus in June 1951. The Deluxe Microbus (known as the 'Sunroof Deluxe' in America) was the most luxurious version of the Volkswagen Transporter T1. The Deluxe model featured eight rear side windows and two rear corner windows, making it the '15-window' but was not available in Europe. Meanwhile, the European-market Deluxe Microbus, with its additional eight small skylight windows is, accordingly, the '23-window'. From the 1964 model year with its wider rear door, the rear corner windows were discontinued, making the latter two, the 13-window and 21-window respectively. The 23 and later 21 window variants each carry the famous nickname 'Samba' and are particularly revered.
This particular example was a home market German delivered example, originally used as part of the postal service. Our vendor is a lifelong Volkswagen enthusiast who purchased this splitscreen in May 2014 and used it for a couple of years on family camping trips, before deciding to carry out a full restoration in 2016. When our vendor purchased the vehicle, it was in a two-tone brown colour combination, so the decision was made to return the splitscreen to its original colour combination of white and green, but with some modern-day comforts discreetly added.
As is so often the case, a large amount of structural work was needed, the bodywork was stripped right back to the metal with a new front end, one short side and one long side replaced, as well as floor pans and struts. Around the wheel arches and door shuts some more localised repairs were needed, but the finished product was a completely solid shell ready for paint. The paint was entrusted to Fisk and Dailly paint shop, who did a superb job, the finish is excellent and it still gleams today. The interior has had cabinets added, a sofa which turns into a double bed and various discreetly hidden away USB charging ports and the upholstery was completed by 13 Stiches. A full new wiring loom was fitted, the engine fully rebuilt, gearbox renovated, and a freshen up of the suspension and braking systems, so it now drives as good as it looks. A nice modern touch which is well hidden away are the addition of two solar panels on the roof, these are linked to a leisure battery to keep the van charged whilst pitched and also to run the USB ports, interior lights and engine bay service light.
The splitscreen is being celebrated for its 75th anniversary at the Goodwood Revival this year, so what better time to buy one and get involved in the celebrations? Supplied to auction with a V5 registration document and various bills and receipts for works undertaken. Consigned by Fraser Smith
