The tradition of sports derivatives of the Beetle dates back to the early hours of the car's long career. Wilhelm Karmann is one of those who will meet with success, particularly in the United States, where the cocktail of a flattering look and reliable and economical use will ensure an enviable fate for his creation. The line is signed Luigi Segre then at the head of Ghia in Turin, and there is no doubt that his pencil stroke allowed the Karmann Ghia to go through the decades with just over 500,000 units built.
The history of this car is unique because its owner drove at his wheel when he was a student in the United States. Many years later, having become an accomplished entrepreneur, he finds this abandoned Karmann on the property of his American host family and decides to repatriate it to France for a complete restoration. Nothing will be left to chance, the car is sent to Portugal at Alfa Rétro LDA. On site, the bodywork is separated from the chassis and all corroded elements will be replaced and treated. All the chrome and accessory parts will be refurbished, taking care to save as many original parts as possible. The running gear, the brakes, the fuel and heating circuit as well as the electrical harness will be completely replaced. The color chosen is the very elegant slate gray - original Porsche color (6001 Schiefergrau) with red skai upholstery. The final result is splendid with impeccable alignments and perfectly stretched paintwork and sparkling chrome. Of course, the mechanics received the same treatment and lifting the back cover would be enough for any potential buyer to be convinced. The engine is dismantled and completely overhauled, the cylinder heads, intake ducts and valve ducts are prepared. The moving assembly is rebalanced (crankshaft, flywheel, clutch, etc.) and machining to lighten the flywheel is carried out. Equipped with two HPMX 40 carburetors and electronic ignition, the car displays good performance and very good driving pleasure. There is no doubt that this Karmann Ghia is one of the most beautiful currently on the market and the € 66,930 invested will only support our point.
