Description
1956 Karmann Ghia Lowlight Coupe, Judson Supercharged!
This stunning black 1956 Karmann Ghia Coupe was produced on May 16, 1956, and was originally delivered to New York, USA via Charles Weis of Queens Village, NY. It made its way to Ohio, where it was driven regularly before being parked up in a garage for many years. It remained in very original condition before being offered for sale and purchased from thesamba.com 25 years ago and shipped to the UK. The project was started but sadly not completed and subsequently sold to its current custodian in 2012. It has been a labor of love and over the past 14 years has been painstakingly restored with the help and support of several renowned Vintage Volkswagen specialists. The results of their efforts on this early Ghia are clear to see.
Some of the many features to note include:
*Matching Numbers Body, Pan, doors, and the Original Engine, whilst not in the car, is with it.
*Judson Supercharger
*Dehne Fuel Gauge
*SWF Windshield Washer Pump * Glass Jar
*ISP Tachometer & Boost Gauge
*Hazet Tourist Tool Kit
*Original Service Book, Handbook, Brochure
*Birth Certificate From Volkswagen included and confirms that original engine number
*Factory Optioned to have Whitewall Bias Ply Tires by Birth Certificate
*Original 1957 Registration Decal still intact!
The body is in excellent condition, freshly restored in the factory color of L41 Black, and it looks great. I have several video clips that you can also catch over on our Instagram page, @holygrailgarage , that I can share with seriously interested parties as well. As with most early Ghias the body and pan had suffered and required some metal work, which was carried out to the highest standards by Steve Gilbert and his team at One On One Restorations.
The interior was faithfully restored as well, retaining many original features only found on an early Lowlight Ghia, details such as the early air vent control knobs and rubber bulkhead mat which was sourced from Lowlight Werks. The early steering wheel was refurbished in the correct one year only shade of beige, and finished off with an original Petri Sun Dial horn button. The original early sunvisors and rear view mirror assembly have been left untouched as a nod the cars heritage, it also has the early dome interior light, correct thin backrest seats, and original style door panels in the correct cord and grey vinyl with white piping, and as a finishing touch it retains its original vintage Volkswagen in-dash radio, and a repro Bamboo shelf... the list goes on! Very accurate, and as fresh as they come.
Mechanically this Ghia features a freshly rebuilt 36hp engine by Michael Bruce Engineering with a newly rebuilt Judson Supercharger by George Folchi. The displacement has been increased to 1400cc's and includes an Original Okrasa crankshaft, Judson coil, a Bosch 010 distributor, and a new starter, finished with a Vintage Speed Exhaust. It has done little mileage, pulls remarkably well, keeping up with modern traffic with ease.
Where possible the original parts have been refurbished and used. In addition to the original engine case, there are various parts that weren’t good enough to use, but have been kept for completeness and included with the car.
I have several video clips of the engine running and the car driving as well. Just text me at (858)366-2549 or via WhatsApp at Brendan Finn (858)366-2549 and I can send those over for your enjoyment! The engine also has a deep oil sump for added oil capacity and a dual pipe muffler with larger diameter tips for added flow.
Overall this is a beautiful early Ghia, fresh, completely restored, and with several exotic and tasteful period accessories, too.
Here's your chance to own an extremely early and fresh Lowlight Karmann Ghia and at a price you can't beat compared to the modern day cost to build another to the same level! Thanks!
$68,000 US Dollars
Please note this gorgeous 1956 Ghia is located in Hertford, North of London, in the UK.
