Seeking to enter new markets, Porsche drastically departed from tradition with the introduction of the 924 model in 1976. A water-cooled, front-engine coupe with a rear transaxle, the new entry-level Porsche offered enthusiasts economical performance from its inline four-cylinder while the western world grappled with a new order for the global oil supply. The platform proved successful, evolving into the fender-flared 944 in 1982. In 1985, the 944 S was introduced with a 16-valve 2.5-liter engine providing a welcome extra dose of horsepower. Just two years later, the 944 S2 made its debut with further refinements and an even larger 3.0-liter engine. Representing a sweet spot in the range, the S2 remains a true enthusiast machine thanks to its punchy, responsive engine and engaging handling characteristics.

This 1990 Porsche 944 S2 Cabriolet was completed at the Neckarsulm factory in February 1990, finished in Alpine White over black partial leather. It came equipped with the desirable five-speed manual transmission, and a series of notable options, including cruise control, protective side strips, the hi-fi sound package with speakers, Blaupunkt BEA 80 Equalizer Amplifier, and CD-2 stereo head unit.

Sold new to a resident of California, the 944 remained under their care until it was acquired by the White Collection in 2014. Sparingly used over the course of its life, just 16,434 miles showed on the odometer at the time of cataloging. A series of invoices dating back to 1993 indicate diligent maintenance carried out over the years, keeping the car in good order, mechanically and cosmetically.

While on display within the White Collection, the 944 was routinely started to ensure proper function of its mechanical systems. In 2023, the car passed to the consignor who fitted a new battery and set of tires. Sparingly driven since, the car remains in good functioning order and is accompanied by owner’s books with a leather pouch, tools, a top boot, air compressor, and a document binder.

Thanks to its 3.0-liter, 16-valve engine, the 944 S2 is a potent sports car that takes full advantage of the excellent handling characteristics of its balanced, front-engine chassis. A well-maintained, low-mileage S2 Cabriolet is increasingly rare and highly compelling to serious and casual collectors alike.
