From the day it was offered through decades of iterations, the 930 has continued to prevail as an icon of performance supremacy to millions of performance enthusiasts throughout the world. Without unwarranted hype, the 930 revealed earth-shattering performance figures across all measured standards. After unprecedented success pioneering turbochargers in the 917 Can Am and 911-based sports cars, Porsche took the bold step of developing a reliable and capable turbocharged road car. Porsche's previous high performance 911, the Carrera RS was a raw and elemental homologated race car adapted for the road, the 930 was designed to be a proper flagship: a luxurious and refined car meant to effortlessly cover great distances at high speed.Contemporary press gushed about the 930s effortless ability to gain speed with deceptive composure, a joyful if not blisteringly fast surprise for those who had yet to experience the power and afterburner snap of a turbocharged car. The 930 immediately became the surprise supercar of the decade, brimming with wide fenders, rear spoiler, and hunkered down racing stance, the 930 put Porsche in a different category than it had previously occupied. In the eyes of exotic performance car enthusiasts a new contender had arrived, one that would dominate and ultimately alter the course of every future Porsche offering.General OverviewThis Porsche 930 was purchased by the current owner in July 1985 and has remained in his care, residing in southern California, as documented by the clean California “pink slip” issued in 1985. Finished in the desirable and attractive original color combination of Ice Green metallic with cork leather interior, this Porsche is one of 727 J-Series USA version 930s delivered in 1977. Delivered with a factory sunroof, headlight washers, rear window wiper, and Fuchs staggered width wheels, the chassis number indicates this car to be one of the earliest production cars built for the 1977 model year, further supported by the August 1976 build date stamped on the original door tag. Currently indicating 158,000 miles on the six-digit VDO speedometer, the long-term owner logged the majority of these miles commuting to his Santa Monica, CA office. General service and maintenance have been regular until more recent years as the owner aged out of driving and gradually reduced his regular use of the car.Approximately 12 years ago, the owner had the car professionally repainted for cosmetic improvement and more recently the engine and gearbox were removed, the top end of the engine was comprehensively rebuilt by German Motors, Santa Monica, CA, the clutch serviced, and all fluids and systems checked. In July 2022, the car returned to German Motors for a full-service including oil and filter change, valve adjustment, new valve cover gaskets, front and rear brake caliper rebuild (all four), new brake pads, new brake rotors, and replacement for the rear sway bar link bushings. Throughout the past 40 years of ownership, the owner had thoughtfully collected records and service invoices on the car. While living in the Pacific Palisades, the owner was fortunate to be able to evacuate the 2025 fire, relocate most of his belongings, and bring the car to a safe location. However, at this time, the owner has unfortunately not been able to recover the service records. In preparation for sale, this Porsche has been serviced by Eason Autoworks, Oakland, CA, including the replacement of both fuel pumps.General ConditionToday, this Porsche 930 offers clean and correct driver level finishes as maintained under long-term California ownership. The car was repainted in the original Ice Green Metallic to very good standards approximately 12 years ago and has benefited from ongoing indoor storage and minimal accumulated miles in recent years. The finish is very nice overall with smooth gloss, correct microflake metallic, and consistent coverage across all body panels. Though not the original paint, all metal body panels have been metered with a digital paint meter, returning low two-digit numbers indicative of respray only. The steel body panels are straight and solid with good fit and operation. The trim and badges are in very nice condition, as are the lighting and glass. The side and rear glass retain the correct Sekurit brand etches indicative of factory original glass. The rubber trim is in very good condition including the correct Porsche accordion bumper ends and the embossed rear wing rubber which is in excellent condition. A correct set of Fuchs wheels are mounted featuring polished aluminum rims and black centers. A mixed set of Pirelli P5000 205/55 R16 front and Continental ContiSport Contact 225/50 R16 rear tires are mounted. The original cork leather interior is in good original condition displaying what appears to be the original finishes and components that have been maintained by the current long-term owner. The leather seating surfaces on the front seats are supple, with minimal wear, though typical bolster wear is evident on the driver’s left bolster and some lower seat foam has softened to create more of a seat bucket pocket. The carpets are original and in generally good condition as are the rear seating surfaces and carpeted seatbacks which create a convenient storage shelf when folded into the down position. The dashboard, door panels, and door caps are similarly nice and the black accent materials, steering wheel, and shifter are all in very good to excellent condition. A modern Kenwood AM/FM CD stereo has been installed in the dash. The VDO gauges are clear and contrasting with excellent black trim rings, crisp numeric indication, and orange needles. The switches are correct and in very good condition and the sunroof operates smoothly fore and aft.The engine compartment is original and unmodified. Having benefited from recent professional engine work, the cosmetics have not been restored, though the overall condition is sound and representative of a rarely seen original example. Although the major air conditioning components remain in place, the system is currently not blowing cold air. Overall, the engine and engine compartment remain undisturbed and unmodified, a particular delight given this early series 930. The front storage area is also original showing some aging to the otherwise original finishes but revealing sound structural elements beneath the carpeting. The date coded original spare tire is included. The underside of the car is sound and presentable showing no visual evidence of damage or structural repair to the pan, rocker panels, or suspension mounting points. The car starts, runs, and drives well, responding as one might expect from a car that has been consistently well-maintained and driven with pride. Aside from a bit of patience required when cold starting, the engine pops to life and the clutch engages easily for smooth first gear takeoff. Once underway, the gearbox operates with good synchromesh and linkage. The steering is responsive and the braking quite good coming down from highway speeds on a firm and tall pedal. Overall, the driving experience is sound and responsive, offering a reminder of how enjoyable these cars can be once a driver respects the race-bred capability and ferocity evolved from years of Porsche racing. This is an excellent opportunity to acquire a very drivable and presentable 930. Finished in its original color combination, this Porsche 930 is offered with an owner’s manual, tool roll and tools, a set of matching floor mats (turbo embroidered on front set), and a spare accessory belt.
