Product planning and dealer information meetings are standard in the corporate world-usually routine and uninspiring. However, when it comes to sharing updates within top automotive performance brands, attendees are carefully selected. That's why it was especially surprising when, on 6 September 2021, a tightly cropped image revealing product announcement dates leaked the existence of a highly anticipated RS variant of the 718 Spyder-18 months ahead of its official debut. The hype around the car grew to extreme levels, yet, like most special limited editions and RS models, allocations were limited and first offered to those still within the vaunted 918 Spyder Circle.
Those select few who were able to place an order for a 718 Spyder RS were in for a treat. Just like the GT4 RS, the Spyder RS was equipped with the same naturally aspirated 4.0-liter flat-six engine found in the 911 GT3. In mid-engine configuration, the high-revving engine delivered 493 horsepower and came exclusively with Porsche's dual-clutch PDK transmission on the RS model. The performance of the 3,214-pound Spyder, with its chassis optimized to suit the additional power, was electrifying with the run to 60 mph flashing by in 3.2 seconds on the way to 191 mph. Just like the GT4, an optional Weissach Package was offered for the Spyder RS that included titanium tailpipe trim, a carbon fiber hood, carbon fiber side air scoops, carbon fiber mirror covers, a carbon fiber Gurney flap on the rear spoiler, and "Weissach RS" badging.
Offered with less than 400 miles, this 718 Spyder RS not only features the $12,570 Weissach Package with its carbon fiber lightweight elements but also includes an additional $13,610 in well-selected options. Most notable on the list: a Leather/Race-Tex Interior in Black with Carmine Red Stitching, Front Axle Lift System, LED Headlights including PDLS+, BOSE Surround Sound System, with Black leather covering the steering wheel and gear lever selector, inner door sills, and steering column casing. A full accounting of the 15 additional-cost options that total $26,180 are listed on the original window sticker that accompanies the car. Sold via Porsche Kansas City in August 2024, the clean CARFAX confirms it one owner status and low mileage which at the time of cataloging remains just below 400.
If Porsche's current product plans are to be believed, the beloved 718 models will become fully electric by 2027, and as a result, the 718 Cayman GT4 RS and 718 Spyder RS may well be the most collectible Cayman variants ever created. This near-new 718 Spyder RS Weissach is offered with single ownership, an impressive specification, full Xpel Stealth PPF and ceramic coating, and is sure to thrill its next owner with its GT3-sourced performance and open-topped motorsport heritage that harkens back to the aluminum Spyders of the 1950s.
