Description
Fabulous 1934 Packard Twelve Convertible Victoria by Dietrich.
One of the most sought after body styles on the 1107 Series chassis.
Older restoration, still in lovely condition.
Formerly in the Holmes A Court collection.
Shannons are proud to offer one of the most desirable pre-war American classics we have had the privilege to consign, a magnificent 1934 Packard Twelve. Built on the 1107 series chassis, the Packard features Dietrich’s fabulous Convertible Victoria (style 737) coachwork and retains the original Dietrich body tag in the correct location under the passenger’s seat. According to the data plate on the firewall the Packard was delivered through the Fonda Motor Car Co. of Syracuse, New York and the following identifying marks have been found on the car itself;
Engine number: 902207.
Frame number: 902300.
Front axle number: 902293.
Rear axle number: 753807.
Transmission number: 902235.
Vehicle number: 737-37.
Dietrich body number: 6669.
Although no records exist to trace the car’s early history, our research indicates it was previously in the United Kingdom and was reportedly restored there in the 1970s by Hans Edwards. The Packard was offered at Christie’s auction at Beaulieu in July 1985 and thereafter belonged to Perth businessman Robert Holmes A Court, who maintained an extensive collection of classic cars at the time. The car was acquired by the Late Owner via a Brooks-Goodman auction in Sydney held in August 1999 and has been the centrepiece of the FM Collection ever since. Rarely seen in public over the last 23 years, the Packard’s older restoration was clearly done to a very high standard and the car has developed a lovely patina throughout. The older dark red duco still shows well apart from some minor micro-blistering on top of the bonnet, the chrome responded well to polishing, with only minor tarnishing in places, and there is some scuffing on the fluid-filled bumpers (weighted to reduce vibration). The tan leather upholstery, door panels and carpets all show minimal use, the painted woodgrain dash and engine-turned instrument panel look fantastic and the timber door cappings are in lovely condition. Like all the cars in the FM Collection, the Twelve has been standing for some time and will require mechanical recommissioning but the engine does turn freely.
Arguably one of the most significant pre-war cars in Australia, Packard’s flagship Twelve would be a star of any collection, eligible for a host of major events like Motorclassica and welcome at international concours around the globe. Sold unregistered, an opportunity to purchase such a special motor car is not to be missed.
