The Packard Tenth Series, introduced in January 1933, enjoyed a brief but significant seven-month production run before the company transitioned to a conventional fall release schedule with the Eleventh Model that August. Engineering advancements included a robust X-brace frame, dual coil ignition, and downdraft carburetion, culminating in a refined 120 horsepower eight-cylinder powerplant in the 127.5-inch wheelbase Model 1001. The exterior design introduced gracefully skirted fenders and a distinctive V-shaped radiator shell, while the cabin showcased aviation-inspired instrumentation and premium trim. The abbreviated production cycle created inherent rarity, establishing Tenth Series models like the Coupe-Roadster offered here as significant examples of Depression-era American luxury engineering.
This particular 1933 Packard Eight Coupe-Roadster was delivered through Packard Washington on 14 March 1933 as indicated by its firewall production tag, marking it as a early-production Tenth Series example. The vehicle's known history includes long-term California ownership beginning with Robert Brinkman of Glendale during the 1950s or 1960s, who commissioned an initial restoration in the 1970s, followed by a second Southern California custodian from 1995. A photo-documented, frame-off restoration executed by the renowned MD Coachworks of Los Angeles in 1998 elevated this rare Packard to concours standards, earning it the prestigious Debut Award at the 2008 Meadow Brook Concours d'Elegance. The car showcases an elegant two-tone livery of tan over maroon with a complementary tan canvas top, maroon leather upholstery, and period-correct chrome wire wheels. It is also comprehensively equipped with desirable period accessories including metal side-mounted spare tire covers with integrated mirrors, a trunk containing period luggage, Packard Trippe Speedlight driving lights, and Firestone Deluxe Champion whitewall tires.
This Coupe-Roadster represents one of only nine documented Model 1001 examples listed in Packard Club registries, underscoring its significance within the marque's limited Tenth Series production run. Preserved in the Academy of Art University Collection since 2016, this Classic Era Packard presents an exceptional opportunity for continued concours exhibition or grand touring enjoyment, embodying the pinnacle of American pre-war luxury engineering and design.
