Description

The MGC was the first 'high performance' version of the MGB. From early on in the design stages of the MGB there was an intention to create high performance variants, using a range of Vee engines that did not make it to production. The MGC was much more than a tuned MGB, in fact it was a completely re-engineered car, but retained many visual connections to the MGB. On the outside the MGC was often mistaken for an MGB as the only visual difference was the heavily bulged bonnet with a transverse chrome strip that accentuated the bulges, and the standard use of 15” wheels instead of the 14” used on the MGB. Inside there were very few differences between the B and C, other than the 140mph speedometer and tachometer with a yellow and red banding, set against lower RPM than the MGB.

This lovely example was purchased in 2018 after much deliberation to partake in a charity classic car run. Two enthusiastic petrol heads decided upon the Cape to Cape rally from Cape Trafalger in Spain to Cape Cornwall, a near 3,000 mile undertaking. After careful consideration they settled on an MGC to use and TVV 68F was purchased. The car in 2019 completed the charity Cape to Cape rally but was also one of only two to not require the help of any support crew with the owner stating it behaved faultlessly. Lockdown came about and the car was used infrequently until 2022 when the owner decided to once again complete the Cape to Cape which in 2022 started in Cape Cornwall driving to Cape Wrath then over to Ireland to Cape Clear and finally driving back to Cape Cornwall via Wales, some 3,500 miles in 14 days, again completing this time with just the need for a new fuel pump when a brand new unit had failed on day one. The event raised over a £1 million and this plucky MGC was a key entrant.

To enjoy such an event this MGC was not a standard car, the specification is quite impressive, the engine has a gas flowed head, Multi branch exhaust manifold, MGM2 camshaft, vernier timing gear, lightened and balanced flywheel, MG Motorsport distributor, uprated oil cooler and radiator and full stainless steel exhaust system. The front suspension benefits from uprated torsion arms, a telescopic damper conversion, Spax adjustable shock absorbers and a Poly bushed quickrack. Th rear has Parabolic springs also telescopic damper conversion and Spax adjustable shock absorbers. To further assist a heated front screen was fitted, Alloy 'knock on' wheels with Uniroyal rain sport tyres, uprated headlights, MGB servo and a lovely wood rim steering wheel. A wonderful little classic car, perfect for short or indeed longer journeys with a fantastic shine and finish… indeed this would grace many shows as it would timed rallies but is equally at home pottering around on a Sunday afternoon, perfect British classic car ownership.
