In 1963, Mercedes-Benz launched the W113 range of sports cars designed by Paul Bracq. This began with the 230 SL and featured a beautifully proportioned light sports body (Sport-Leicht) with two comfortable seats designed for touring. Power came from a well-balanced in-line, six-cylinder engine with multi-port, fuel injection and formed the basis of an entire range of W-series motor cars. All were rear-wheel drive and equipped with independent rear suspension; a feature which greatly improved road handling over the earlier models.
On offer today is a left hand drive, automatic example that sports handsome blue coachwork over a tan interior; both in good order. This was originally exported to the USA and registered on 1st January 1967. It was later imported to the UK and registered in June 2004. Since that date, European headlights have been fitted as well as a new steering wheel to the correct pattern. Both the current owner and previous one have stored the car in a secure, humidity-controlled environment where it has been regularly started to keep everything well oiled. We are also informed from the vendor that only a few hundred miles have been added to the car since his acquisition in 2013, a gift to his wife to commemorate the birth of his first son. We are assured that this SL Roadster will have a fresh MoT test certificate by the time of the sale and, indeed, it has also recently undergone a full service with respected Mercedes-Benz restorers, Roger Edwards Motors. This included full tuning, fuel injection pump overhaul, brakes and all engine & gearbox mounts replaced. Also, new track rod ends (both sides), new belts, a whole new fuel tank and expansion tank as well as new throttle rods and, to finish off this meticulous diagnosis and repair, a fresh set of number plates all costing a grand total of £15,818.99. These attractive 'SL' sports cars were highly regarded when new and little has changed over the intervening years. With the ever-increasing prices being asked for these motorcars in mind, this would appear to be an ideal opportunity to acquire a reasonably priced example with a full complement of owner's manuals and books.
