While the Geländewagen was conceived for a life of service in the military, the rugged off-roader would earn its phenomenal popularity as an urban-cruising sports utility vehicle. The first-generation model was so loved during its four decades in production that, when the time came for Mercedes-Benz to introduce an all-new model for 2019, the boxy design cues and renowned sense of tactility carried straight over—at a time when Land Rover opted for a much more modern makeover of its enduring equivalent, the Defender.

Before the second-generation G-Wagen arrived, the manufacturer waved goodbye to its standard-bearer with a string of special models. These notoriously included the G 500 4×4², the G 650 Landaulet, and the six-wheeled G 63 AMG 6x6 behemoth. Also offered was the incredibly rare ‘Final Edition’, which featured a 6-litre V-12 engine fed by a brace of turbochargers to produce some 621 horsepower for an uncanny 5.3-second sprint from 0 to 60 mph. Just 65 units were produced worldwide, each finished in Obsidian Black Metallic over an interior trimmed in Black and Anthracite Exclusive. They were also fitted with a set of bronzed 21-inch AMG forged wheels to complement the tinted door mirror caps, grille surround, and spare wheel cover.

One of very few cars supplied new to the Middle East, this left-hand-drive example was delivered to Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates on 25 January 2018. Equipped with an immense array of features, the specification includes—but is by no means limited to— a Harman Kardon surround sound system, smartphone integration, a power sliding roof, rear-view camera, heated front and rear comfort seats, light brown stitching, velour floor mats, an AMG performance steering wheel, plus stainless steel, chrome, and carbon fibre trim.

The G-Wagen has been driven very sparingly throughout its single ownership by The Mirage Collection and accordingly shows a remarkable 612 kilometres at the time of cataloguing, ensuring it will appeal to a host of collectors.
