The result of seven years of development led by Bruno Sacco, in November 1984, in Seville, the Stuttgart-based company presented the new 'middle-class Mercedes' (Mittlere Mercedes-Klasse in German) 200 D - 300 E, a four-door three-box saloon identified by the production designation W124, to the press. A key role in the design was played by the extensive use of electronic computers, particularly in the fields of safety and aerodynamics. There was also extensive application of microprocessors on board the car to control numerous functions, mainly aimed at improving active and passive safety as well as fuel consumption and pollutant emissions. The introduction of the W124 marked an unprecedented technological leap, both in engine and body development.
In September 1991, at the Frankfurt Motor Show, the Stuttgart-based company launched the 300 CE-24 Cabriolet, a four-seat convertible version of the coupé. This was a return to a market segment (that of four-seat cabriolets) abandoned in 1971 with the withdrawal from the list of the 280 SE Cabriolet 3.5. To compensate for the loss of the roof's structural contribution, more than 1,000 components were redesigned. The result was a torsional rigidity comparable to that of the saloon.
The convertible top was fully retractable and had a glass rear window, benefiting visibility both by the absence of the optical distortions typical of plastic rear windows and the presence of thermal defrosting filaments.
This 1995 E 200 Cabrio is an Italian-born car (the 200 model until the previous year was only for Italy, Greece and Portugal due to tax regulations) that has been used and maintained throughout its unbroken period of use. A total of 6,922 were produced from July '93 to July '97 and this one is exactly halfway through production. Aesthetically, it is already part of the 2nd series of the model and so the front grille is built into the bonnet and no longer protrudes. The soft top is electro-hydraulic and has just been overhauled, the fabric has been replaced as it has been marked by time, the bodywork has been thoroughly polished and the current owner has had it detailed.
It is equipped with automatic climate control, electric antenna, Abs system, original alloy wheels. The colour combination is perhaps the most elegant that can be found on the market Brillantsilber metallisch (744 M) and Schwarz interior (261). The car is in excellent condition in every respect and is ready for use on the back roads to enjoy an excellent drive in the open air.
