Rare E60 AMG version
The Mercedes 500 E is a legend, and although the model fell out of favour for several years, those enlightened enthusiasts who hung on to their cars were not mistaken: from its birth, the saloon assembled by Porsche had the potential to become a true collectors’ car. And yet … That was without reckoning with Mercedes’ historic tuning partner, AMG. Once AMG got its hands on the car, the result was an explosive combination. In 1993, after the W124’s third and final facelift, 12 examples of the E60 were first of all assembled directly in AMG’s workshops; these were retrospectively named the E60 Limited. These rare examples were sold by the company at an astronomical price, but made such an impact that a select group of customers asked for similar cars. Mercedes offered them the possibility of having a new 500 E delivered to AMG, where the tuner would take care of the modifications. The capacity of the V8 engine was increased to 6 litres and power went up to 381bhp, while the car was fitted with a sportier AMG suspension and special AMG alloy wheels. All its competitors were simply swept aside. Only 126 or so cars were ever built. The W124 E60 AMG thus has all the ingredients which make up a real gem: a unique engine, unrivalled power at the time, very limited production and, above all, an exceptionally strong character.
The model we are offering for sale is a genuine Mercedes-Benz E60 AMG. It was modified in the German tuning firm’s workshops in 1994 following an order from AMG Japan. It was thus fitted with a 6-litre M119 V8 and a special exhaust system, AMG suspension, 17in wheels, an AMG steering wheel and a speedometer reading up to 300km/h.
Today, this E60 is in superb condition, with its attractive blue-black metallic paintwork, wide wheelarches and AMG alloy wheels combining to give it an utterly brutal appearance. Inside, the wood trim still has a rich shine and the black leather is scarcely worn. The car is equipped with several options, including a sunroof, electric front seats with a memory function and automatic air-conditioning. This W124 arrived in Europe in 2016 and comes with its service booklet and owner’s manuals. E60 AMGs rarely come onto the market, especially with under 76,000km (47,200 miles) on the clock. Our example is therefore worthy of consideration by the most demanding collectors. Its exclusivity and inherent qualities make it one of the most desirable modern classics to have been built in Germany.
