Conceived to be the world’s finest open two-seater, the Mercedes R107 was released in 1971. A replacement for the W113 ‘Pagoda’, the Benz was timelessly elegant and engineered to the highest standards. It was also fiercely expensive but, such was its excellence, this glamorous drop-top enjoyed an 18-year production run. More than three decades after production ended, the R107 remains a reference for build quality and stylish sophistication.
This Mercedes-Benz’s first owner ordered a 280 SL in July 1985, although delivery was not scheduled until 1986. In the interim, the model was withdrawn from sale, so the order was amended in November 1985 and so a 300 SL was delivered instead.
A five-speed manual finished in Pacific Blue with beige hide and optional rear seat, chassis “050843” was registered in August 1986. The car was fastidiously cared for and only changed hands in 2019, at which point the odometer displayed a mere 44,700 kilometres. That figure has risen to 46,190 kilometres during the second owner’s custodianship. Serviced by a Mercedes-Benz dealer prior to consignment, this cabriolet is offered complete with brochures, hardtop, history file, manuals, and spare key.
Attractively specified and well cared for throughout its life, this timeless Mercedes-Benz would make a stylish yet practical addition to any collection.
