The Mistral is the car that started Maserati’s time-honored tradition of calling its GranTurismo cars by the name of famous local winds.
This car had the same mechanicals as the Sebring, but, thanks to the two-seater bodywork in Pietro Frua’s fastback version, it showed a much more modern look than the previous one, whose style was definitely more traditional.
A first prototype of the Mistral was presented at the Turin Motor Show in the autumn of 1963, however its production did not start until 1964.
The Mistral was was given the task of replacing the successful 3500GT / 3500GTI model.
This new model of Trident was available with Maserati’s in-line six-cylinder engines in 3.5, 3.7 or 4.0 liter versions and all cars were equipped with Lucas injection system.
The Spyder version of the Mistral was presented at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1964. Its elegant design was further improved with the convertible version by Giovanni Michelotti, while the bodies were built by Vignale in Turin.
The spider version of the Mistral had mainly a steel body, while the front and rear bonnets and the doors were made of alloy. The extremely rare Hard Top, also built in aluminum, was designed for this car as an optional feature. The Mistral Spyder was only produced in 124 units and today represents one of the rarest and most sought-after models among the Trident Classics.
The car was produced in September 1966 and exported to the USA to be presented at the San Francisco exhibition. After the salon it was sold to a New York merchant. In 1967 it was sold again to an English collector, who kept it for 35 years. This Mistral then arrived in Belgium in October 2010, where it has remained until today under the same owner. This car is thus considered by collectors from all over the world as an incredibly valuable piece of history, as well as one of the rarest and most sought-after classic Maseratis.
