Description
Chassis No. ZFFWC26B000063521
The Pininfarina-designed Ferrari Mondial 8 made its debut at the 1980 Geneva Salon, with its name paying homage to the famed 500 Mondial sports racer of 1953. While not a race car, "Mondial" translates to "world," and instead reflected Ferrari's approach to designing the new model as a world-market car from the outset.
Ferrari continued to enhance the model through several iterations. First, the Mondial Quattrovalvole introduced four valves per cylinder in 1982, followed in 1985 by a larger, 3,185-cc displacement in the 3.2 Mondial and its Cabriolet counterpart. Power rose to 270 horsepower while larger cylinder bores contributed to a 17-percent increase in torque from 188 to 224 lb-ft. Along with the new engine, refined styling brought the 3.2 Mondials closer aesthetically to Ferrari's two-seater models, with smooth body-color bumper assemblies, a similar front radiator grille design to the 328, and a fresh convex wheel design. Minor interior revisions completed the Mondial 3.2's transformation into a wholly refined 2+2.
This particular Mondial, chassis number 63521, is a left-hand-drive, European-market 3.2 Cabriolet produced in June 1986. As a European-market car, it desirably produces 10 horsepower more than U.S.-market examples and weighs 287 pounds less due to its lack of additional crash bracing between the passenger and engine compartment. Finished in Rosso Corsa with a Nero soft top, this Mondial showcases one of the more striking leather/carpet combinations available with Beige leather contrasted by Rosso carpets. The car's clean CARFAX Vehicle History Report contains just two entries which indicate that the Euro Ferrari was imported to the U.S. through Long Beach, California, in July 1986, and declared to meet U.S. highway safety specifications by the following February. While its subsequent whereabouts are undocumented, the Veglia Borletti odometer's current double-digit reading of a mere 48 miles and its time capsule condition clearly indicate that the Ferrari was meticulously preserved in static storage for decades.
Documentation on file indicates that the car most recently spent time in the U.K. where it received service from Migliore Cars Ltd. in February 2017. The work included replacing the cam belts, tensioner bearings, and ancillary belts, as well as draining the fuel tank and changing the fluids. A letter dated 25 February 2019 suggests the car received further sorting from noted Ferrari expert Bob Houghton Ltd. Addressed to a Mr. Graham Stock of Morriston, Wales, it notes that the car "is in excellent condition with original plating and finish on most visible parts... the general condition seems to be in keeping with an unmolested low mileage car." In January 2025, in preparation for sale, JCM Performance completed a timing belt service with engine and transmission fluid change. Save for an upgraded Ansa exhaust, this Mondial is now offered in virtually showroom-fresh condition and is surely one of the finest reference-quality examples of the Mondial model extant. It presents an enticing preservation class entrant in concours or Ferrari Club of America events under new ownership.
