Description

- An ultra-rare Italian-American grand tourer - Dodge V-8 power with hand-crafted Carrozzeria Ghia coachwork - One of fewer than 100 examples believed to have been built - Originally delivered to Austrian-American painter Count Rudolf Anton Bernatschke, whose work included portraits of General Douglas MacArthur and European royalty - Powered by the correct 315-cubic-inch Dodge “Poly” hemi-head V-8 with a smooth two-speed automatic transmission - Previously restored and finished in an elegant dark blue over a cream interior with blue piping - A true Jet Age masterpiece, once favoured by Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Hollywood’s elite A true fusion of American power and Italian craftsmanship, the Dual-Ghia Convertible is one of the most glamorous and exclusive cars of the Jet Age. With sleek, hand-built coachwork by Carrozzeria Ghia and a Dodge chassis beneath, it combined style and performance in a way few cars of its era could match. Built in exceptionally limited numbers—fewer than 100 are believed to have been produced—these striking convertibles were reserved for a select few, with buyers handpicked by Dual-Motors owner Eugene Casaroll. Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Desi Arnaz, and even Richard Nixon were among those lucky enough to own one. This particular example, serial number 163, was originally delivered to Austrian-American painter Count Rudolf Anton Bernatschke and his wife, Cathalene. Bernatschke may not be as well known as some of his fellow Dual-Ghia owners, but his reputation as a portrait artist was formidable. His clientele included military leaders like General Douglas MacArthur, US senators, European royalty, and Hollywood celebrities—an artist with an eye for beauty and elegance, just like the car he chose. The Dual-Ghia itself was born from an unusual story. Originally conceived as the Dodge Firearrow concept, the design was nearly lost to history when Dodge decided against production. It was Casaroll who saw its potential, acquiring the rights and putting it into production under the Dual-Ghia name. The result was a car that looked like a high-fashion concept but had the reliability of a Dodge V-8 and underpinnings built to handle American roads. Previously restored, this car is now finished in an elegant shade of dark blue over a cream interior with blue piping, complemented by a tan convertible top. Important original details remain, including its engine-turned instrument panel and dash plaque noting its original owner. Under the bonnet sits the correct 315-cubic-inch Dodge “Poly” hemi-head V-8, paired with a two-speed automatic transmission. While the restoration shows some age, with mild interior wear and cracking paint, the car remains a striking piece of automotive history—one that would benefit from cosmetic attention but still carries undeniable presence. A car that once turned heads among Hollywood’s elite and artistic visionaries alike, this Dual-Ghia is a rare opportunity for someone who appreciates style, exclusivity, and the effortless cool of a hand-built 1950s grand tourer. With so few ever made and even fewer surviving, it remains one of the most desirable American-Italian collaborations of its time.
