Introduced at the 1973 Frankfurt Motor Show, the BMW 2002 Turbo was one of Germany’s first turbocharged production automobiles. Although a mere 1,672 examples were produced, the Turbo’s brilliant performance and bold, distinctive graphics left a lasting impression on enthusiastic drivers.

This late-production Turbo was sold new in Germany and imported into the US during the late 1970s by a collector of exotic cars. In addition to the Turbo’s desirable optional features – such as quick-ratio steering and a five-speed close-ratio dogleg gearbox – this example was fitted with an extremely rare, experimental polarized rear screen. A dealer in Buffalo, New York, acquired the Turbo in 1980 and sold it to well-known BMW specialist Mike Van Loo of Fenton, Michigan. Mr. Van Loo retained the 2002 for the next 28 years, preserving it in outstanding, largely original condition. During his lengthy ownership, Mr. Van Loo installed later BMW wheels, an updated ignition system, and a taller final drive for improved performance. The original final drive unit accompanies the sale, along with a collection of NOS components, a rare touring tool kit, and factory literature. In 2006, the Turbo won Best in Class at the EyesOn Design concours in Michigan, and in 2010 it was shown at the prestigious Meadow Brook Concours d’Elegance, also in Michigan. Currently displaying just 36,000 km and presented in superb unrestored condition, this is an extremely impressive example of BMW’s groundbreaking turbocharged sport coupe.
