The Aston Martin DB5 Coupé is one of the most iconic cars ever built. Often seen in Silver Birch as the personal car of super-spy James Bond.
For customers who wanted to have something which was even a bit more special than a “standard” Coupe, Aston Martin built the Convertible version.
Nearly a thousand coupé DB5’s were built but just 123 customers were able to drive away in the convertible version of one of the most iconic cars.
Due to the low production number, the DB5 convertible is one of the rarest Aston Martins ever built.
The DB5 convertible was priced at £ 4,490,- which was far above the price of an average house at the time, assuring that only a privileged people were able to afford an example.
British elegance and class bought examples of the DB5 convertible such as Peter Sellers, Beryl Reid, and even HRH Princess Margaret.
Under the bonnet, the DB5 Convertible sported Aston Martin’s 4.0-liter engine, which produced a reported 283 brake horsepower and helped the DB5 achieve a top speed of 143 mph.
While the original production run offered a five-speed ZF gearbox as an optional extra, this was offered as standard on the rarified convertibles, as were power windows, an alternator, and exhaust silencers. Other standard equipment included reclining seats, wool pile carpets, twin fuel tanks, chrome wire wheels, an oil cooler, full leather trim in the cabin, and a fire extinguisher.
Just 19 of the open-top versions were produced in left hand drive specification, making a DB5 Convertible in factory original left-hand drive, as seen on the car offered here, extremely rare.
Due to the fact that most countries drive on the left the demand for original left hand drive versions is much higher then right hand drive versions resulting that in August 2021 an Aston Martin DB5 Convertible was sold at auction in Monterey, California for $ 3.195.000,-.
ABOUT THIS SPECIFIC EXAMPLE
The history of this Aston Martin DB5 starts on the 9th. of April 1965 when this delightful and rare DB5 was completed and dispatched to the distributor in the United States.
The car was originally delivered in the famous Silver Birch with a Dark Blue interior and matching blue hood.
Yes, as the James Bond specification.
A Normalair air conditioning system (still in the car), a Bosch Koln TR radio with manually operated aerial, two Marchal fog lamps, and chrome wheels are just some of the non-standard equipment items listed.
A little more is known about its earlier years, though it has retained its numbers-matching engine to the present day.
The Aston has stayed in the USA most of its life.
At some point in the car’s history, the Aston was professional restored and refinished in its current color combination of Dark Blue over Parchment leather upholstery and matching convertible soft-top.
Today this breathtaking DB5 Convertible continues to benefit from the well-maintained restoration.
CONDITION EXTERIOR
This particular example is in a very nice overall condition. The body of the car is nice with a beautifully Dark Blue paint.
One can see on the paint here and there some signs of use and personally we should consider to respray the Aston in it’s delivery color scheme.
The chrome / aluminum parts are all in a very nice order, especially the bumpers and impressive grille is in excellent order even as the lamps and the surrounding of the air intake on the bonnet.
The doorgaps of this convertible are excellent and the wheels are recently renewed for period correct new examples.
CONDITION INTERIOR
The car arrises some questions to us as it is originally delivered in Silver Birch with a blue interior and blue soft top. But if we look at the car and definitely at the interior it seems that the interior is original. The leather on the seats as well as the softtop seem to be from the 60’s.
But according to the buildsheet the car is delivered in the most desirable color scheme of a DB5.
Today the interior has a nice patina. The leather shows on a nice way signs of use. The softtop is in the same condition. One can clearly see that the material is almost as old as the car. It has a beautiful patina.
The instruments and controls in the Aston are all in good working order.
DRIVING EXPERIENCE
A DB5 is just as joyful to drive as it is to admire in a serious collection of sports and GT cars.
A quarter turn of the contact key and immediately the sound of the fantastic Aston 6 cylinder. The brand-new stainless steel exhaust makes this sound striking.
The seats are soft and guarantee a noticeable comfort for a touring car.
Increasing the speed you can appreciate the stability in the straight, due to the precision of the steering, and the roll not remarkable in the curve, virtue especially of the front stabilizer bar, clearly well sized.
Whether you are a collector, an Aston Martin enthusiast or simply someone who appreciates automotive beauty, the DB5 Convertible is undoubtedly one car you will not forget.
